YOUR LAND
AND MY LAND"
by Hasel Hayes
A Christinas to Remember
We heard Papa stomping
his feet on the back porch be
fore he came into the kitchen.
He brushed the snow off his
shoulders and shook his cap.
“I’m afraid we can’t make
it to the other farm for Christ
mas. The snow is still coming
down.”
“But what will Santa Claus

Papa shook his head — “We
ther had an opportunity to buy
a top-notch farm and jumped might all freeze".
“We have some soapstones,
at the chance but for three
years he had tried to sell the there are some bricks by the
home farm — no one had the back steps, even some flat
irons. I’ll heat them in the

“We should take all our

The wind was cold and snow
drifts bothered some, but we
made it safe and sound.
The big
sister (thirteen
years old) had chicken with
homemade noodles ready for
us, and a big chocolate cake
with apple sauce.
In the comer of the parlor
stood a Christmas tree from
the woods all decorated with
strings of popcorn and chains
made from colored paper.
There were no wrapped
p-esents under the tree.
That evening after we were
thawed out, we hung our
stockings but there was no [
fireplace — only a heating1
stove. Chairs with knobs held |
In the morning there was
only one present per person—
Santa Claus did the best he
could. As I remember, my mo
ther received a small box of
stationery, the sister just older
than myself and I found each
a doll in our stockings. Other
than that I don’t remember the
presents.
There never was a happier
Christmas. We were all toge
ther again.
