• Scientists from Parke-Davis
have developed a synthetic
skin made of a Teflon-like
plastic film to spray on areas
such as burns. This acts as
a temporary skin until graft
ing is possible. Another team
of researchers from Massa
chusetts has found a way of
freezing skin from cadavers
or donors. It is also being
used as "temporary skin”,
but using new tissue-typ
ing technique, it could be
used for permanent grafts.
* Another theory recently de
veloped as to why western
man is afflicted with vari
cose veins and Asians aren’t:
an English researcher, Dr.
Burkitt explains that the
condition is caused by west
ern man’s low-residue diet
and consequent bowel prob
lems, causing him to strain
his abdomen and put too
much pressure on the valves
of the lower limb veins. This
hypothesis would also ex
plain hemorrhoids.
