Hope it doesn’t work out that way though. Know I slipped up and didn’t get any canyon history in the column so will see what can be done about it this week. I’m going to be running out one of these days though so if any of you out there have any interesting history I would be glad to get it. DID YOU KNOW? Potato Hill, 2000 feet elevation was named by Mrs. Thomas Hen- ness because of its resemblance to a potato. Mt. Horeb, 4500 feet high, was named by Capt. David B. Smith after the Mt. Horeb of Bible fame. The San- tiam river was named for the Santiam Indians. Pamelia creek and lake were named by John Minto after Pamelia Berry in honor of her sunny disposition, while she was em ployed as camp cook in the Marion county road locating party for Minto pass. Several people have asked where I have found my inter esting bits of history that I have been putting in the column. Most all of this comes from a scrap book kept by my mother, Catherine Tumidge. She has always been interest ed in the history of the area and has a very interesting scrap book on this. Some of these facts were printed in 1941 and others in 1959 at the Teachers Advised on Prevention of Rheumatic Fever and Care for Children Last week I had a nice letter from Mrs. Ferd Jones of Gold Hill, saying how sorry she was to miss coming up for the re union but due to heat didn’t Chances are that sometimes feel she could make the trip during the coming school year, Her husband was principal virtually every classroom in that may prevent rheumatic fever or minimize its after-ef of the Gates School and they Oregon will have at least one fects, the Heart Association has left in 1937.
