Oregon Notes from Hermit Hollow By Rod Barker | Man has taken some things | from the earth which cannot Ibe replaced. Seeds returned to j the earth will multiply. The joy of early spring with the anticipation of a new year or garden crops to be sown returned to me early in July. Bob Franklin arrived with his heavy duty rototiller and made an excellent job of bury ing the rye and weed stubble on a patch of vegetable gar den left under a cover crop. There I transplanted brussel sprouts, broccoli and kale plants I’d grown from seed. Also late crops or carrots beets and rutabaga were sown. And what to do with those 500 snaps that had all germinat ed? Transplant them from their thickly sown seed beds for them to grow up to sturdy plants until it’s time to put them in their permanent beds. Likewise, thyme, sage, and perennials started from seed. We neighboring gardeners have all been remarking on the phenominal green growth of squash and tomato without I any signs of fruit formation. Now, suddenly the tomato vines are covered with fruit, i the squash are being huge size zucchini far outdoing the I crook-necked which last year had small plant growth but abundant fruiting. That is one of the things that makes gardening so inter esting; no two seasons are I alike and one is always having to experiment. This year cu cumbers and bush beans sown in late June are as forward as ' those sown in early May under hotcaps. There are some bare patches showing up where the early peas, carrots, potatoes, beets and lettuce are cleared and in a few weeks the area will be much larger and compost heaps now maturing will be spread and rototilled in to make sustenance to the good earth for future crops. I enjoy visiting some of my neighbors, who, over the years have fed the birds and chip munks so that it is a delight to watch their antics at close quarters. My sunflowers are going to yield a bountiful crop of seeds which I shall chop up and see if some of these little entertainers might like to perform in my yard during the long winter months ahead.
