The February Heart Fund Campaign Motor Vehicle Division. supports research, education and community service programs of your Heart Association. With the worst of the winter . driving season still ahead, the division has spelled out the first common mistakes drivers make in reacting to snow or ice. The mistakes, the divi sion says, can be summarized in three words—overnow ering, oversteering and overbraking. The division sayes that a driver who exerts too much pressure on the accelerator when the road surface is slin- pery will find that his car will not move at all. or it may start fotward with the rear end skidding to the right or left. A lieht foot on the accelerator is the answer to this problem. Pressure should be increased verv gradually and released if wheels start to spin. When it comes to braking on snow or ice. the divis’on savs brakes should be applied soon er and more gently than in normal driving. A pumping ac tion is recommended. If the wheels lock while braking, the brake pedal should be releas ed momentarilv and then ap plied again, lightly and grad ually. Space between your car and the car ahead can become cri- ’ Doris and John Cook tlcal when braking efficiency is reduced by ice on the road, the division added. Getting a car in motion and Detroit, Oregon keeping it that way on a slip Idanha, Oregon Idanha, Oregon pery street is largely a matter of preparation, the division says. Good tread on the t’res is basic. Contrary to what some people think, reducing the air pressure in tires will not increase traction for start ing or holding the road. Snow tires and studded snow tires help, but still have less traction than reinforced tire chains. If you drive in areas where there are hills, the division says you should look well ahead of your own car to de termine if there are any ve hicles on the hill blocking the way because they cannot make the grade. If so, it is best to stop well before you reach the start of the incline because if you start un the hill and have I to stop behind the stalled ve hicle, you may not be able to start again on the upgrade. In short order, several cars can hack up and create a real traf fic snarl that could have been avoided. When weather conditions are drubtful, the division urges drivers to listen to current road reports before leaving home so they can he prepared for whatever conditions they may encounter along the way. \ / - Cook's Market Idanha Union Service Stuckart Lumber Co.
