Detroit Residents Want Water Level in Reservoir Kept at Higher Level in Fall DETROIT—A lot of water goes under the Highway 22 bridge here and over and through Detroit Dam in a year. Many people in the area would like to keep more water under the bridge and less go ing over the dam. The Army Corps of Engineers, whicn operates the dam, says release of water at certain times is necessary. The people who use Detroit Lake for recreational purposes end those who earn a living from the recreational users want a permanent summer kike established and maintain ed. Thousancte of signatures were obtained for a permanent level and presented to Congressman Al Ullman. The congressman has contacted the Corps urging serious consideration of the re quest. Alvin Luehring. chief of op Peace on earth and joy abound— I erations and maintenance for both Detroit and Green Peter dam projects, said water has to be drawn off the reservoir legmning in late summer. If ; not, he said, there would not be sufficient capacity in the lake later to hold runoff wat ers from flooding. He said flooding is not the only con cern. In times of little or no runoff, water must be released for power generation and to allow dilution downstream of polluted water to maintain fish life. Some recreationists com plain that the Corps keeps re ferring to recreational use of Nlghteagals the lake as "secondary.” A Corps official, in a letter Name of Team to Ullman, noted the primary Stayton T.V................ purposes for which Congress Riverview ................. approved the dam are flood Silver Dollar Tavern 32 control, power generation, ir Tea Manigue Les Coif. 31 rigation, navigation and flow Stout Creek Lumber 29 The Stayton Mali ...... 27 In Femme Beauty.... 23 Santiam Lounge ......... 17 High individual game, Helen Fery, 212. Edward Slayden, owner of one of the two main lakeside resorts, questioned the "second ary” term when 750,000 people visit the recreation area each year.
