-a ->.................. . VOLUME XXV ON TiHE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND ---------!"■> » NUMBER 39 Boosters Name 1 I Up and Down Committee To The Avenue By Don Moffatt It seems that the years roll around real quickly. Here it is almost October, and next week is National Newspaper Week. So what, you say? There is a lot to be said about the free press of our country, and I’ll dig a little deeper into that next week. I guess the wife and I had better stay home. We took a nine-day trip into Canada earl ier in the year, and guest what, it rained and rained for five of the nine we were gone. This past weekend, we sort of got fed up with things around the shop so took our trailer and headed for the coast. Know what? It rained almost all the time we were gone. So now, Monday comes pretty good. Oh well, we did get some rest and that is what we went there for. The Spout ing Horn at Depoe Bay was working and that is always in teresting, so all was not lost. We visited our favorite spots, and got filled up on good sea food, so what’s the use of com plaining too much. I see now where the Auto workers, who are on strike, say they want an automatic retirement plan for all those who have had 30 years in their line of work. Not only that, they want $500 to $550 a month. That would mean a man who started at the age of .18, could retire at the age of 48. Now who in the world, ex cept a real lazy person, would want to knock off work per manently at that age. Many people reach the age of 60 and still do not want to be put on the shelf. I for one would go nuts if all I had to do was get up in the morning, eat, read the paper, then take care of the yard, and sit, sit, sit! Not only that, I think I’d drive my wife nuts at the same time —being as restless as I am. Some of these days, though, if I don’t kick the bucket first, I’m going to take a crack at laying around—at least part- time. I have a lot of things to do, and a lot of places to visit. Of course, if a person had a lot cf money and could travel a lot, it would make a big difference too. If I had a big fat pension, like that being asked for by the auto workers, it would help too. Remember this, these union demands come right out of YOUR pock et, in higher prices for your automobiles. Someone has to pay, and I don’t believe that the auto makers are going to absorb this expense. After all, they are not in the business for their health. Now that the clubs and lodges are beginning to meet for the fall and winter, how about getting up out of the easy chair and come to the meetings. The North Santiam Chamber of Commerce could do with a little more interest in their meetings. The club president. Harold Wiltse of Mehama, is trying to do some thing with the Chamber for the good of the whole area— but it is hard to accomplish much if members do not turn out and express their want3, and help provide some pro jects to work on. The Cham ber has tried noon meetings, and then there is a clamor from some areas that they can't make it—so a night meeting is tried, and these areas are still not represented. What to do!! Looks as if everyone is willing to sit back and let a few do the work which should be done by many. Think it over — the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce has accomplished many things since it was or ganized. so why don’t you do something to help out. Weather, Detroit Dam 7 a. m. Highlights of the game were discussed and how the team is improving. A nominating committee was appointed to select officers for the year. They are Clare Hen- ness, chairman; Mr. and Mrs. John DeMain and George Long. It is hoped the committee will have a list turned in to the president, Rex Davis, by Oc tober 9, so the election of of ficers can be held on that date. Davis said he hoped to see more Red Jackets at the JFK- Santiam game Friday than were in evidence at the last game.
