EDITOR To The Editor: One man writes that because of the riot at the University of Oregon he will oppose the 19 year old vote. I am a 29 year old computer programmer, and tc me the riot is one more reason to vote FOR Ballot Measure 5 to low er the voting age to 19. In the first place, there were approximately 400 students in volved out of a passible maybe 20,000. That’s a healthy 98 percent who are not trouble makers. Secondly, I know these SDS members, anarchists, and other radicals, modern-day- k n o w - nothings-who-attend-c Jlege, are not representative of today’s youth. They are a minority of noise makers who can take the center scene because we dis enfranchise the responsible 98 per cent, arxl there is no mean ingful way for them to partici pate now. Presently a young man whose birthday falls wrong can be nearly 25 before he can vote for President of the Un ited States. This is seven years after he registers for the draft and is given the fullest obliga tion of citizenship, seven long years of second-class citizen ship during which the 1 per cent of his peers who are tn ub- le-makers is throwing rocks, starting fires, getting all the publicity, doing all the “par ticipating" and claiming to be representative of young people.
