|
I have been quite interested
in all the publicity given to
Earth Day, and I feel that the
movement is good. The only
thing I have against a concert
ed drive with a l:t of ballyhoo,
is that when it cools, and it
usually does, people will drift
right back into their wayward
ness in disposal of litter. It is
a lot like revival meetings. A
lot of people come forward,
all in good faith, but when the
pressure is ff, they forget.
Let us hope that this will not
be the case for this worthy
cause. Many people put forth
a lot of effort in talking about
our ecology. We need to be
made aware of the mess we
are in and we must d j some
thing about it. It is going to
be a costly thing, this clean
ing up our mess, but if we
wish to preserve our country,
it will be necessary to put
some money where our mouths
are. It is a simple thing to
say we’ll do it—but s mething
else to carry the program for
ward.
A lot of politicians are mak
ing “noise” along these lines,
but then we’d better not put
too much stock in what they
are saying, as they certainly
have a lot of ther things to
do. Recent drives have proven
one point, however, and that
is if you put a price on return
ing containers, they will be
retrieved, or at least many of
them will he taken out of our
highway ditches.
