ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND
MMBEK 9
VOLUME XXV
Up and Down
The Avenue
By Don Moffatt
1
It seems that about all you
hear these days about our
younger generation are bad
things and for that reason it
gives me great pleasure this
week to say something on the
brighter side. It brings into
sharp focus that not all young
people are hoodlums. We have
many thousands of good
wholesome young folks who
are desirous of getting the
best education our schools
can offer. Recently a group
of the Seattle Liberation Front
a lestist outfit staged a viol
ent two-hour demonstration
and caused some $30,000 worth
of damage in the downtown
area. They had bn: ken win
dows and smeared paint on the
federal courthouse. They
should be ashamed of them
selves, and not only that, they
should be forced to pay for
every bit of damage caused,
even if they were put in
camps and required to do rea!
hard labor.
But the bright part of the
affair was when some 20 stu-
dents from Queen Anne high
school gathered to help clean
up the mess. One of the stu
dents who organized the group
said “that kind of violence
made me mad. I d:n’t believe
in that kind of dissent.”
This just proves to me that
only a small minority of our
students are of a type that wid
deliberately destroy property.
Let us hope the “good” young
people will band t:gether and
put these bums to shame, and
eventually maybe we can get
on with the business of edu
cation without disruption from
a few odd balls.
