4—The Mill City Enterprise, Thursday, Jan. 22, 1970 Recreation Group Backs French Pete Utilization Plan Of U.S. Forest Service “The Pacific Northwest al ready has a shortage of de veloped campsites, and we need these new facilities,” he said. “The proposed road along the upper east side of French Pete will provide ac cess to Olallie Mountain which offers a breath-taking panor ama of the Oregon Cascades with the Three Sisters in the foreground." Armstrong said preserva tionists have objected to pro visions for logging in French Pete, but he said much of what logging would be done is aimed at wiping out Infesta ti ns of mountain pine beetles and white pine blister rust that threaten to wipe out all stands of pine trees in the val ley. Old timber in the valley is declining with age, he added, and is ready for orderly re newal to provide more young, growing forest cover. “Wilderness hikers ought to welcome the plans for making French Pete accesible,” said Armstrong. “The permanent road system, besides giving access for hunters, fishermen and protection crews, will pro vide wilderness buffs an ex cellent jumpoff point for pene trating same superlative parts •of the Three Sisters Wilder ness.’’ Armstrong said the access road will make effective pro tection of French Pete Valley against forest fire possible for the first time.
