Big School Fire Top News Story for 1969 in Detroit By Boots Champion DETROIT—Record snow, a disasterous school fire and tragedy furnished the big news in the Upper North Santiam Canyon in the year 1969. Other major events includes the completion of 31 timber sales on the Detroit District plus 67 Cedar sales in the calendar year. Total volume of Willamette National Forest timber sold this year was 65,- 750,000 board feet with a min imum value of $3,788,001. Jim Ron J. and Hobby Bob Mark Marvin and Carolyn Stayton, Oregon pleted a total of 29 sales. Total volume of sales was 131,330,- 000 board feet with a mini mum value of $3,192,014.60. Included in the Forest Serv ice program this year was the construction of 26.7 miles of Forest Service roads and the reconstruction of 18.9 miles of roads. Snow, the heaviest in hist ory began in mid-December and by the end of January piled up some seven feet in the Marion Forks area to somewhat less in the Detroit- Idanha areas. The heavy ac cumulation drove hungry deer and elk into the city limits in search of food, and extensive ly damaged a number of sum mer homes in the Stahlman tract and in the summer home addition in the Breitenbush area, as well as at Breitenbush Hot Springs. On March 11 about 1:30 a. m. fire gutted the interior of Detroit’s new high school Damage to the less than two- year-old $420,000 facility was estimated at $265,000, which was covered by replacement insurance. The building under reconstruction since early spring reportedly will be ready for use the first of the year. A second major fire leveled Idanha’s only grocery store on July 24th. Origin of both fires has never been determined. Two people drowned in De troit Reservoir during the summer while boating, and an elderly Silverton woman lost her life in a car accident near Marion Forks. Twenty-two-month-old Gale Bush of Idanha was electro cuted when the antennae his father was installing on the roof of his trailer house, hit a power line and the charge was sent to the trailer house. The child was standing on damp ground with his hand on the trailer. In the Forest Service re forestation spring and fall tree planting program, a total of 1,036 acres were completed. Of this figure, 837 acres were contracted. In addtion 107 acres were aerial seeded and 926 acres aerial seeded. Following is a month by month summary of other events. May— Some 240,000 young fish were fin-clipped and marked at the Marion Forks Fish Hatchery for experimental purposes at Foster and Green Peter dams. Some 200,000 one-inch Chin ook were marked, and 25,000 year-old Chinook and 15,000 two-year-old steelhead were fin-clipped and marked under the research program of the Oregon State Fish Commis sion. A Businessmen’s Association was formed in the upper North Santiam Canyon. One of the functions of the Asso ciation is to advertise the up per Canyon more through the media of highway signs. Detroit school was presented a thophy in honor of Bud Crist at a father-son third annual athletic banquet held at De troit school. Crist was named the outstanding ball player in the Junior State Basketball Tournament held at Stayton last summer. Presentation was made by Frank Hancock, pre sident of the Businessmen’s association. Dorsey Smith and Gerald Hiebert, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Quincy Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hiebert, Idanha, were selected to attend Boy’s State at OSU. Girls chosen for Girls’ State were Delva Saner and Barbara Stephens, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Saner and Mr. and Mrs. How ard Stephen also Idanha. All four students are juniors at Detroit school. Sponsors were the American Legion Idanha Post 141 and the Auxiliary. Jone— Petitions were circulated in the upper North Santiam Can yon, requesting the Oregon State Fish Commission to con sider planting Kamloop Trout in Detroit reservoir. A request was also made that more fresh water shrimp, or opossum shrimp winter food be planted in the Detroit Reservoir foi the fish. Steps were taken to reor ganize the Volunteer Rural Fire Department. Due to the lack of man-power the De partment had ben rated as inadequate by the Insurance Underwriters. This meant the rural district was about to lose its present rating and that if reclassificatied, insurance rates would go into a higher buck et. Precipitation was 11.62, including an inch of snow. Detroit Cougars captured third place in the Oregon State Basketball Tournament play ed at Pendleton. April— U. S. Plywood-Champion Papers, Inc. Idanha Veneer plant was awarded the Nation al Safety Council’s Certificate of Commendation. The award was In recognition of a record of 80,175 working hours with out lost time or injury to any employee during 1968.
