OSU Prof Learns About Crabs By Listening Device i 7—The Mill City Enterprise, Thursday, Jan. 1, 1970 varied, high-pitched chirps rec orded on hydrophones and oth er electronic gear. It is pos sible, he believes, that bio acoustics can be used to locate and identify crabs and other fish life. This could reduce the time of fishermen in finding the de sired species and increase their catch. Jensen describes ocean crab sounds as “something like those of a cricket, only more highly-pitched” or sounds you sometimes get from "rubbing vour hand across a blown-up balloon.” The crab sounds are ‘blown- up” too in the research. Am plification is about 10,000 times to provide sufficient sig nal for analysis. The engineer doesn’t know whether the crab sounds are merely mechanical — opening and closing of claws, rubbing of legs. etc. — or biological — produced with ‘voice” organs. Neither does he yet have an inkling as to whether there1 might be communication be tween the crabs. When a hydrophone was lowered in a baited crab net to the bottom of Yaquina Bay,1 however, the researchers could gauge the coming of the crabs I by watching the wavy lines on the oscilloscope in the boat. Noise from motr boats, surf, traffic, etc., complicated the readings but Jensen feels find ings to date are “certainly in teresting and could be useful as a guide to future work.
