In fact, I think we should tab these individuals as lame-brains instead of hunt ers, because a true hunter wouldn't think of pulling off the stunts these people try to get by with. At least, these individuals must leave their brains at home when they pick up their firearms and head out on hunting trips. For throughout the hunt they play a dangerous game of Russian roulette with their firearms endangering their own lives as well as the lives of their hunt ing partners. We’ve just checked through the hunter firearms casualty reports for this year and we can come to no other conclus- ion. And we will have a few more of these stupid accidents before the end of the year. If you don’t think that some hunters are playing this dang erous game, just take a look at this. Here’s a hunter who w ill have a pretty tender place on which to sit for quite a spell, for his “sitter” is exactly where he got it, at two-foot range. It seems that he and his partners had just shot at a deer and one member, sitting in the bed of the pickup, start l'd to reload his rifle when it discharged, hitting the victim you know where. Now anyone, in this writer’s opinion, who has a loaded firearm in a ve hicle, or allows one to be there, belongs in this lame-brain cate- g >ry of hunters. And for this one, it won’t make much difference about loaded firearms in vehicles be cause he’s dead, the victim of one. This hunter's loaded rifle was leaning upright in the front seat. He leaned across I the rifle to open the off do r for his partners. As he did so the rifle slipped and began to fall out the door butt first. The hammer caught on the floor- boards, and that’s all she wr te a bullet right under the arm pit. In both instances the bullet hit the car and ricochet ed, wounding a hunting com panion inside the vehicle. And h w about this bright hunter? He and a companion were driving slowly along with the “bright” hunter’s rif le resting muzzle-down on his Ixiot. For no apparent reason he flipped off the safety and the rifle fired. For the rest of this man’s hunting career—if he decides t; continue hunting —his partners will be calling him “Old Three-Toe.” What would you do if you suddenly slipped and poked the barrel of your shotgun down in the mud? Sure, you’d unload the weapon and then proceed to clean the barrel. That’s the proper and sensible thing to do. Rut not this hunt er, who carelessly tried to poke the packed mud out of the bar rel with the forefinger and BINGO—off go a couple of fingers. Here’s another dandy game of Russian roulette, a stupid stunt which occurs far too of ten. And parents must make sure that their kids receive adequate training in the safe handling of firearms and that they hunt under proper super vision.
