The incident occurred on the North Santiam Highway in fr nt of the Enco Service sta- tion at Gates. The impact damaged the front end and the side of the car, but did not kill the deer, | Mrs. Williamson said. She add- I ed that the buck acted like he was dazed because he made no attempt to run. This is Thanksgiving week, and as this is being written on Monday, I like to think back on what Thanksgiving meant to me as a youngster, and that is some time back. At that time, I lived on a farm in North Dakota, There always seemed to be snow on the ground and real nippy weath er. It was a day of family get- togethers and a lot of special foods which we did not have every day as we now do. In those days there were no re frigerators. no electric lights on these farms. But one thing we did have then a good deal more than we have today is togetherness. We didn’t have automobiles, just horses, so we usually stayed in a more or less tight circle of friends and relatives. And what’s wrong with that. We always had a big time. It seemed to me that things were much less compli cated. We didn’t have the vie-1 lence then as we do now. There were no incidents of pot smok ing, and students in the schools then, went there to get an ed ucation, not to riot, or tell the teachers how to run the schools. It is true that things have changed a lot during this time, and I can’t say that it is all bad. I think that our students today, for the most part, are much better educated than we were, at least they have the opportunity to receive that ed I ucation. We have larger schools and a much finer educational process which is directed to wards giving a broader educa tion. This is good. But on this Thanksgiving day, I think we should all bow our heads in prayer, and give thanks for this fine country MARION FORKS—A young in which we live. Many of the broad casters seem to fear for the freedom of speech. They real ly hit the air in a hurry stat ing the present administration was trying to put a muzzle on all types of news dessemina i tion. I have no fear of that. I know full well that if that were really attempted there would be a real uprising But by the same token, I think it is a good thing. Newspaper ed itors and broadtasters, wheth er radio or TV need a god -haking up once in awhile. While these agencies can ex ert quite a force in the coun try, I think a large segment of the people read, digest the news, and then form their own , pinions. I for one do not ex- nect the w:rld to agree with me on all points, hut if I can make them wake up and think for themselves on some issues, I feel that I have done my part In closing this Thanksgiving w eek, why not give thanks for the many blessings we have We’re much better off than most people on the face of the earth.
