c The VOLUME XXIV NUMBER 24 erprise » N S Chamber Nominates New Officers I This is Friday morning and 1 believe we’re in fir a thunder storm. The weather for the most part since leaving home has been ideal, although we have had a day or two that has been on the verge of being too hot. The wind continues to bl'iw, however today it isn’t so bad. After leaving Calgary, B.C. we continued on our trip east across Canada until we came to Winnipeg, then down to Grand Forks, N. D. and on to Minnesota. The trip across Canada was uneventful. Mostly wheat ciuntry and we missed the towering mountains of the Canadian National parks. We stayed at a private lake near Sauk Centre, Minn, for a coup le of days with my nephew and hLs family; They have a trailer parked there all the time, and we parked our trail er near them. Did a little fish ing one day and didn’t get skunked. It was fun, and some thing that I never seem to get around to do at hime. After leaving Minnesota we came to Buffalo Center, Iowa, where Alta has a lot of cousins. You can talk all you want to about western hospitality, but this is something else. We’ve been fed an<l fed at all these various homes, and if we don’t quit this eating and loafing we’ll be like “Iowa Hawgs” before we get back home. Yesterday. Thursday, anoth er couple went with us on a 300 mile trip. We visited the “Little Brown Church In the Vale.” It is one of the historic old churches in this state. It was built in 1855. I can rem ember my mother telling me about it when I was a little fellow. Alta had visited the church when she lived in that area many years ago. From the little church we drove to Packard where she lived for a year in her youth. We found the old house, just as it was when she lived there, so it was quite a thrill for her. We drove over to Alden to visit another cousin and his family. All in all it was a real nice day, topped off by a pic nic on the farm in the evening. This town of Buffalo Center is a real friendly place. I’ve met a lot of people and of course visited the newspaper here. I got restless on press day, and went down and made part of their press run for them. It seems good to get back into a shop again. I enjoyed talking to people along the line, and in Canada, found they have much the same problems as we have. Too much taxes, waste in gov ernment. and all the rest of the trouble, even to the riots in colleges. I f und they are a- bout as interested in our space program as we are, of course it’s our money that’s being spent, so why shouldn’t they l»e. However, they are sincere in their interest, and told me of many of the good things that have come through the -pace research. I am quite surprised at the farms here in Iowa. They have large bams and lots of corr cribs and cattle and hog sheds The thing that is depressing is that many of these buildings are not used. The farmers live in town, just raise corn, of which there is a huge surplus They take many acres out of production, for which they re ceive some pay from the gov ernment. One of the men here told me that the farmers then plant their com a little thick er. fertilize heavily, and con sequently are rairing more than they used to when the whole acreage was used. Hence they are defeating their own program. It seems a shame when this fine land lays idle but what can be done when there ¡3 more com and other produce raised than can be ut ilized. We’ll leave in the morning for Granville. N.D. where we will visit my brother and his wife and other relatives Then we’ll go to Jamestown to visit Alta’s sitter and well have a family reunion there. Then we’ll leave for home, but I 97103 ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND THE MILL CITY ENTERPRISE—MILL CITY, OREGON THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 1969 Up and Down! The Avenue By Don Moffatt Vjcwspapers, V of o Library Idanha To Expand Fire District IDANHA—Members of the Idanha Rural Fire Protection District anti interested citizen» met at the Idanha Fire Hall Thursday night to begin plans to spread the District’s tele phone alarm system to neigh- b ring Detroit and also to buiki a sub-station and acquire a pumper fire truck for Detroit. Representatives of the State Fire Marshall’s office and Val ley Telephone Co., were among the 24 persons attending the meeting. The Fire Marshall’s office representative told the gathering that Detroit, which is 4% miles west of Idanha, was too far for Idanha’s present pumper to arrive in time and effectively fight a fire. Anoth er pumper would cost the dis trict about $20,500 but the cost could be spread over a ten year loan, the district was told. The district is now limited to one fire station, one pump truck and one tank truck, all at Idanha. No action was taken on the proposals but another meeting of the group is scheduled for June 12th at 7:30 P. M. at the Idanha Fire Hall. $4.00 a YEAR — 10c a Copy Car Rolls Info Lake; Owner Wcfches DETROIT — While Cliff Toney of Idanha was fishing Sunday his car took “french leave.” Toney was trolling about noon near South Shore when he looked up just in time to see his 1965 model car slowly roll down the embankment and sink into the water of De troit Reservoir. Divers, under the direction of reserve deputy Bruce Croghan of the Marion County Sheriff’s office, were able to bring it to shore with the aid of a tow truck and cable.
