Area People Attend Ten-Pin Tourney Jerry Pittam Insurance OVERSTOCKED Walter Thomas Family Take Trip to Steen Mts. GATES—Mr. and Mrs. Walt er A. Thomas anti grandson Chris Emerson spent the Me morial weekend at Steen’s Mt. Steens had received a late snow pack so much of the rimroad was still blocked in places with snow. The road above Krumbo reservoir was snowbound making it neces sary to take the loop back to highway 205 to Frenchglen and take the Fish lake road to the rim road. All the camp sites at Fish I^ke were full to capacity. The campground at Pate I^ike was only partly de veloped and so there was camp ing space left. Some fishermen were having fair success at Fish Lake, taking a few rain bow trout up to about 14 inch es long. None in their party had any luck though. Much of the time was spent hiking and enjoying the view and wild flowers. A hike down McCoy creek was als3 taken but the fish hadn't reachefl the 7000 ft. elevation in the creek this early in the season. The days were warm but the wind blew from every di rection all the time and got quite brisk at night. Not hard enough to blow things away but kept the tent snapping and popping all night. Again the North Santiam Whitewater challenge was blessed with warm sunny wea- ther—and n<, serious mishaps. I think there would have been more people out. besides the thousands that difl attend, except the heavy’ deluge and winds of the previous night prjbably scared them out. Pic nic and camping areas were at a premium anti many wonder ful gatherings of families and friends were enjoyed after the run was over. It was a successful event and I hope that they will continue —under the present North Santiam Chamber and Jaycee sponsorship, if possible os they did a fine job.
