Pacific Power & Light Company Pushes to Keep Up With Growth in Area Pacific Power & Light Com pany reported Monday in its annual report to stockholders that growth in the areas it serves in parts of six western states has resulted in a broad ening of the scope and divers ity of commercial, agricultur al and industrial activities sup porting the economy. New records were set for both energy sales, up 8%, and system power peak load, up 5%. System power operations re quired nearly thirteen billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, the report noted. Household usage of electricity averaged 10,788 kilowatt-hours annually, a new high which is nearly double the national average. The company now serves 480,918 customers, an increase of 10,353, most of which are electric service customers, and has 77,153 stockholders, more than half of whom reside in the six states in which the company operates. The company’s general bush Scio Group Wants Marion Lake Out Of Wilderness Area Representatives from Scio, Portland, Salem, Dallas, Lel> anon and Albany met at Scio Sunday in an attempt to seek reversal of a Congressional de cision to include Marion Lake with the Mt. Jefferson Wilder ness area. About 25 attended. Alva E. Morris, Salem who was chosen chairman of a new ly-organized committee to head up the effort, said Monday pe titions were being circulated to present to Congress. The advisory petitions would ask Congress to return the area to scenic area classification which would permit users to maintain boats and some man made facilities at the lake. Under the Wilderness Area act, boat owners will not be able to leave boats at the lake, and existing structures, includ ing equipment sheds and the Marion Lake Guard Station, will be removed. “It is the contention of the committee that (re-establishing Marion Lake as a scenic area) will enable the public to con tinue to use the lake area for back country camping and pic nicking recreational purposes, and will prevent the removal of the picturesque old guard station together with all the ex cellent tables, fire places, and sanitary facilities on the shore line,” Morris said. The committee is asking all Interested persons to write their views to Congressman Al Ullman for presentation to the House Committee on Iinterior and Insular Affairs. Forest Service officials esti mate there are nearly 200 boats stored in the area on a perma nent basis by lake users. Mrs. Jack Carey recently ac Mrs. Vic Thomas of Wran- gel.
