They enjoyed beautiful, sun shiny weather while there. It was reported to be even un usually warm there for this time of the year. They only stayed overnight one night traveling there, as the roads were good, but on their return trip, it was a different story. They had to stay overnight two nights on their way back home They got caught in a blizzard between Goldfield and Tonapah and it took two hours to go 26 miles. The only place they had to use chains on their trip was on the pass near Klamath Falls. Even though they found all this snow when they returned, they reported that home looked very good to them. Ross Burleson worked at their saw shop for them while they were gone. Fun While It Snowed Mr. and Mrs. Clarence “Ole Erickson returned home on Sunday from a months vaca tion trip to California. They had visited with friends and relatives in Van Nuys, Hemet and Torrance areas. They also made stops at Las Vegas, Reno and visited with friends in Redding. They experienced a great deal of heavy rain while in California but were really sur prised when they came back to find all the heavy snow in Mill City. Mr. Erickson said they had to shovel out their driveway before they could get their car off the street. They said they had an en joyable trip but were glad to get back home despite the snow. Their dog “Big Mike” had been kept by cousins at De troit, Mr. and Mrs. Frank An derson. The dog, a real part of the Erickson household, was “Inherited” when they pur chased Snider’s Resort several years ago. After selling Snider’s Resort to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Slayden of Lyons they purchased a new Extension Unit Will home in Mill City. Before the recent invention of 4-wheel drive vehicles, rock ed roads and paved highways and our modern methods of transportation and communica tion, a snow fall such as we have been experiencing was quite often a struggle between survival and death. This was the case only 30 short years ago in the Elk horn area above Mehama where a few old timers wisely bought their food provisions for a year at a time. As urban dwellers gradually moved out into this primitive area they were amazed at the custom of buying groceries only once a year. The old timers too well remembered winters when there had been no access to the outside , world for several months and food and shelter (the two basic needs of a hum- an) were of prime concern. About 15 miles above Elk horn at the old Amalgamated Mine some of the miners would sometimes winter there. Oc- cassionally they would mis judge the winter or lack funds to store a large enough stock of food and as spring would draw near they would run out of food. To the unitlated who boldly say, “I’d just shoot a deer”, there are no deer in 10 or 15 feet of snow. These men, hardy and well versed in the disciplines of na ture, occasionally misjudged their own fortitude and paid with insanity or death. On one occasion trust in a partner ended sadly. Two miners had remained at the mining site for the win ter but as snow piled higher and food ran low one volunte ered to hike out and bring back provisions. Weeks went by and he did not return so the re maining miner knew he either must walk out for help or starve to death. It was a torturously slow journey over 15 miles of snow with all landmarks obliterated by the deep snow and the only guide the river several thous- and feet below. Late at night the miner stumbled into the Ray Sischo residence at Elkhorn, incoher ent from fatigue and exposure. About all Sischo’s could distin guish from his mumblings was that his partner had taken most of the provisions and left and had not returned. He was still mumbling when he left, obsessed with the idea that his partner had left him to starve. Based on past experiences the Elkhorn, Mehama area may be snowed in for awhile, but it is doubtful that they will run out of food. Although the heavy snow in the area was a real chore to many; to others it was a lot 230 N.
