I have a theory—at least part of a one—ab:ut all these young people and their de mands. I think they need to have a larger part in forming the laws and rules by which they are governed and which in some instances they object to so strenuously. Of course they say, “THAT is exactly what we are complaining about”. But the way in which they are demanding it is all wrong, In my opinion. Getting down to a few words —what 1 really mean is—I believe the voting age should be lowered to 18. This is not suddenly samething I have de cided just because the gover nor of our state thinks so— have expressed it affirmatively for many years. If the 18 year- olds are old enough to fight for their country—or oppose it; drive a car and do many other things adults do—surely they are old enough to vote. I think they would do a very creditable job at it, too. The interest the young peo ple (I am speaking of the sincere non-violent ones) took in our recent elections should prove that they would like to take a more active part in the society in which they live. They might make some mis takes in judgement—but don’t we all. I was talking to one young person this week—we got to discussing the “state of the nation”, so to speak and in the short span of her young life I thought she had some good ideas. It also showed that some of our young still think sensibly and know the score. She wondered why our so- called affluent society seemed so unhappy — why so many frustrations and lack of peace of mind. She has discovered that money does not buy hap piness. That living for one’s self alone can make for bitter ness. Surely we must give of ourselves as well as material things. There is a deep inward satisfaction in assisting some one, cheering them up and on. The young woman said, with wisdom beyond her years, “Must we return to a simpler way of life to find what real happiness is?”. Well, we come back where we started—what is the ans wer. But we are living in a restless, self-centered society— with too many people saying to hell with the other guy— I’m going to get mine.” I’m sure no problems have been solved—but It does us all good to stop and talk about things once in awhile—who knows, perhaps a solution may be found to some of them. In the meantime, remember happiness is where you make it—not where you find it.
