Enterprise ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDER! ’ ND NUMBER 2 VOLUME XXIV THE MILL CITY ENTERPRISE—MILL CITY, OREGON New Equipment Shed Being Built Up and Down The Avenue By Don Motten The flight of Apollo 8 around the moon has caused a big stir all over the world and it really is a feat worthy of great publicity—but what now?- The men were close enough to the moon to tell there was nothing there. Do you sup pose we as a nation of tax- payers will be foxed into a continuation of shots to the moon or other spots far out into space just to prove that we are capable of doing this. Why not sort of slack off on this great expenditure right now. Let us get this war in Vietnam over with first, then do some extensive research on cancer, multiple sclerosis and many of the other diseases we are plagued with. True, a lot of money is going into re search on all of these illness es already, but possibly more money would expedite find ing a cure. I still do not think we can justify the huge appro priations for space shots, just to keep ahead of the Russians. And let us not be fooled by their congratulations on these successes. They have made the boast they they will bury us, and believe me that still is their main goal. The more we spend on space, and war, and foreign aid, the better they like it. They have some sort of idea that we will spend our selves into weakness, and that is just possible. I would rath er see more put into defense of our own country, and more done to build better highways, better schools, better libraries, loetter living conditions for our own people. A selfish attitude? Yes, to an extent. I am confi dent that if we were in troub le, like many of the foreign, nations we help, we’d have to fight our own way out. I hope our diplomats will not be hoodwinked by talk by the Russians that they are taking a soft line. All we have to do to be convinced to the contrary is to look at Czecho slovakia. This little country by itself could never be a threat to Russia, but what they want and what they are work ing for—freedom—cannot be tolerated by an communistic country. Then—let this be a lesson to us—when we are dealing with them. They can not be trusted now, or ever. THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 1969 Two Cons Captured by State Police $4.00 a YEAR — 10c a Copy U. S.
