MEKONG DELTA—A Na vyman from Idanha is playing a key role in the battle against Communist aggression in Viet nam’s Mekong Delta. Radioman 1/c Donald D. Snyder, 30, husband of the former Miss Theo I. Sweeten :f San Diego, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert A. Snyder of Idanha is a radioman on the staff of River Assault Flotilla One, the Navy component of the Army-Navy Mobile River ine Force. This unique force conducts Don's Tire Sales Highway 22 Mill City, Oregon strike operations against main force Viet Cong units along the thousands of miles of can als, streams, and rivers which interlace the delta. The flotil la, consisting of 11 ships and 180 heavily armed and armor ed gunboats, supports infant rymen of the U. S. Army’s 9th Division. In a typical operation, the Navy river boats, transport the infantrymen from the ships to a preselected strike zone in the delta. The troops are landed to sweep the area ashore while the boats with draw to patrol the streams, prevent enemy escape by wat er, and provide gunfire sup port for the ground elements. The gunboats comprise a “mini-fleet” which is unique in Naval history. Its battle- shtps are 60-foot monitor gun boats. Carrying a 105 milli meter howitzer, the monitor is a formidable weapon against the Viet Cong. Armored Troop Carriers (ATCs), 56-foot converted WW II amphibious landing craft, each capable of carrying a platoon of 40 fully equipped infantrymen, comprise over 50 percent of the force. Many of them are equipped with helicopter landing pads, mak ing them the smallest aircraft carriers in the Navy. Other specially equipped craft act as destroyers, mine sweepers, and command boats as the ‘mini-fleet” prowls the delta streams in search of the Viet Cong. Snyder’s job keeps him aboard the flagship of Mobile Riverine Group Bravo, an op erational command consisting of half of the flotilla. He is watch supervisor, responsible for overseeing and coordinat ing the fl.w of communications to and from the force. Petty Officer Snyder accom panies the force as it ranges the length and breadth of the delta. The ships act as a mo bile base for the gunboats, an choring near the current area of operations. It is this ability to move and enter base of op erations which gives the force its great flexibility in meeting the Communist challenge in the watery delta.
