    this annual review of the

By C. I. Flaten. Bist. Mgr.
Beginning in January, a
person who goes to the hospi
tal under Medicare wiU be re
sponsible f:r the first $44 of
his hospital bill. This is a $4
increase In the present $40 de
ductible. Clair Platen, manager
of the Social Security District
Office in Salem said that this
increase results fr:m a provis
ion in the law requiring an an
nual review of the deductible
amount. The first such review
was made in 1968 and it indi
cated a significant increase In
hospital costs which when ap
plied to a formula in the law
requires the $41 deductible for
1969.
Flaten said that the results
varo
mounts a medicare beneficiary
pays toward a hospital stay cr
more than 60 days, or a post
hospital extended care facility
stay of more than 20 days.
These amounts therefore will
also increase by 10 percent ef
fective January 1—to $11 a day
for the 61st through the 90th
day of a h spital stay; to $5.50
for the 20th to the 100th day of
a stay in a past-hospital extend
ed care facility; and to $22 a
day for each day of the “Life
time reserve” of 60 days. The
latter period is a reserve ac
count a beneficiary can draw
upon if he ever needs more
than 90 days of hospital care
in one benefit period.
The changes in the deduct
ible and the co-insurance a-
mounts apply only to the hospi
tal insurance part of medicare
and do not affect the financing
of the supplementary medical
insurance—The voluntary pro
gram which covers doctor hills
and a wide variety of other
medical services.
