IT’S YOURLAW Respect for Law Makes Democracy Live The fact that the traffic sig ••But the Light Was Green” As Ted approached the in nal gave the car permisaion to tersection, the traffic signal proceed did not mean Ted had changed from red to green in the right to bulldoze a person his favor. He pushed down on the accelerator and honked his horn vigorously at the little old lady still toddling along in the crosswalk. The sound of the horn start led the woman. She hesitated— and Ted’s car brushed against her, knocking her to the pave ment. She suffered some brus- es in the accident. “The light was green in my favor,” Ted told the investi gating police officer. “This la dy was crossing against the light. I honked the horn to get her out of the way, it’s not my fault she got clipped.” “Why you young whiper- snapper,” the woman replied. “I started across the street the minute the light changed in my favor. My arthritis just doesn’t let me move as fast as you young folks. I was almost to the other side when you hit me. Who had the right of way? In cases like this the pedes trian on the crosswalk. or other car out of the way. A “green light” is not a com mand, but gives only limited permission. Another example of what a driver with a green light must yield to is emergency vehicles. They have the right of way ov er all traffic in emergency sit uations. They may proceed through red traffic signals with due caution. Traffic facing the green signal must wait for the emergency vehicle. The good driver will proceed through a green traffic signal with caution. Just because you have the green light doesn’t always mean you are “right.” If you insist, you may be “dead right.” (Oregon lawyers offer this column as a public service.
