Donated Jime, Service
Explained by Internal
Revenue Service
The value of your time or
services that you contribute to
a qualified organization is not
deductible as a charitable con
tribution for Federal income
tax purposes.
A. G. Erickson, District Di
rector of internal Revenue for
Oregon, said today that a re
cent item carried by the local
news media contained the
statement that the donor of
services to the Zoomsi auction
as an item for bidding can de
duct the value of the gift at
retail prioe cn his Income tax
return.
A lawyer, doctor, mechanic,
artist, barber, etc., cannot de
duct the value cf his services
contributed, but he can deduct
out-of-pocket expenses, such as
those for transportation or sup
plies. paid in Connection with
these services.
Erickson emphasized, how
ever, that a donor can deduct
the fair market Value of pro
perty, as' opposed to services,
contributed to a qualified or
ganization. For a businessman
who donates stock-in-trade, the
fair market value of the
items is the price he wiuld
have received in the lowest
usual market in which he sells
at the time and place of the
contribution.
He also stated that a stand-
ard rate of 5 cents per mile 3—The Mill City
may be deducted in lieu of
actual expenses for gas and
oil f r the use of a personal
automobile in rendering don
ated services to a qualified or
ganization.
Erickson also said that the
following expenses, in addi
tion to the value of services
rendered to an organization,
are not deductible as contribu
tions: depreciation or insurance
on a personal car, and gifts to
individuals.
