Seaman Matthieu Returns to States After Vietnam Service DA VIS VILLE, R. I. (FHT- NC) — Seaman Apprentice James A. Matthieu, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Matt hieu of 900 Taylor Road, Me hama, has returned to Davis- ville, R. I., following an eight- month deployment to South Vietnam with Mobile Con struction Battalion 58. As a member of the battal ion, which was located 10 miles north of Nanang, he helped to provide rapid and effective construction support to all U. S. and Allied forces in South Vietnam. His battalion was also en gaged in a civic action pro gram designed to assist the Vietnamese people in com pleting self-help projects, such as the building of wells, cul verts, small bridges and schools. The battalion con structed 136 homes for 680 families that were left home less following tne Tet offen sive. Logging Companies Target for Robbers DETROIT—Two area Log ging Companies were the target of thievery sometime over the week end. Tools and other log ging equipment were taken from the Bill Pennick opera tion and the Marion Forks op eration located on Mansfield Mountain in the Breitenbush area. Estimated value of the loss was not learned, but reports indicated it was an expensive haul. Aug. 20 62 50 1557.21 0.21 Ralph Earhart Has State Fair to Open Wreck When Car Saturday, August 24 The Oregon State Fair will open Saturday, August 24 and Hits Mule Deer run through September 2. The Ralph Earhart had a rather bad but exciting experience this week when he started out for Sela, Washington to pick up his son James who was va cationing with his grandpar ents. He had his small son, Char les, two years old and a neph ew, Kim Earhart with him and stopped in Prairie City to get another son Ralph, Jr. The group had planned on going on to Washington when Earhart hit a large mule dear badly damaging his car. Needless to say the deer which weighel about 250 pounds came out on the losing side. None of the people in the Earhart car were injured. Earhart was able to “limp” home with his car after doing some on the spot repairs. How ever, he was unable to bring his visiting son home but he will be returned by his grand mother this week-end.
