This is the time of year
when America is on the move.
Anyone can see this on the
weekends—and all during the
week for that matter. When
you are on the coast, you feel
certain that everyone in the
state plus hundreds of tour
ists are there too. But when
you start out for home, there
are just about as many cars
going to the coast as they are
coming inland. When you get
to Salem, there is a solid
string of cars, campers, boats,
trailers, and all the other ve
hicles that make vacation
time more enjoyable.
In some places I suppose
this summer period means
riots, marches, and all the
other modern forms of some
type of protest. Here, at least
for now, we are more or less
free from the odd balls of the
world. Until this summer, we
have had no hippies, or other
off-beat people, but now they
are moving into Fox Valley.
Even if they do no particular
harm, I feel they are of no
real value to the community
either. Unless a person can
earn his own living, and con
tribute something to an area,
except those who are ili or
retired, we would be better
off without them.
The days of dusty roads,
ba refoot boys and the old
swimmin’ hole are nearly
gone. Now it is no problem
to travel several hundreds of
miles for a weekend. Of course
the barefoot bit is now extend
ed to a larger segment of our
society, and many times it is
hard to tell the boys from the
girls—but by and large, we
do live in a pretty wonderful
country. Let’s all work to
keep it that way.

The steel bridge over the
Little North Fork was closed
Tuesday to all logging trucks.
Marion County Public Works
Director John A. Anderson an
nounced the closure shortly
before noon. He said a log
truck did an undetermined a-
mount of damage to the bridge
Tuesday morning.
It is still passable to auto
mobiles, he said. An investi
gation is under way to deter
mine the extent of the dam
age. Officials do not know who
caused it.
The bridge, commonly
known as the Meyers Bridge,
has been damaged frequently
by log trucks carrying loads
too high to go under the struc
ture. Last year, the County
Board of Commissioners
threatened to refuse a log
hauling permit to one firm
believed guilty of damaging
the bridge, which is on Coun
ty Road 960.
