ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — O1 VOLUME XXIII NUMBER 17 By Don Mollati Right now is a good time to start thinking about clean ing up our city. Before we know it Memorial Day will be here—and you know what that means. Thousands of vis itors will be in Mill City to take part in the North San- tiam Chamber of Commerce Whitewater Challenge. Eacn year more and more people come to enjoy this exciting river run. Therefore, why not do our best to put on a good front for our company. Old buildings no longer being used should be raised. Houses can be painted. Streets clean ed up. Debris removed from vacant lots. Our hat is off to the Detroit Civic club. They are working on a clean-up campaign, and the date is set for April 27. They are furnishing plastic bags, and asking the people to gather all the debris ana place it in the bags. Then they will come with a truck to haul it away. They also will pick up old stoves and refrig erators which are no longer being used. This is a real true community spirit. Maybe some of the clubs here could start a like project. It is worth thinking about. We have a beautiful coun try-let’s make our city match it. The politicians are out beat ing the brush and what a race it is going to be. (Jp to right now, the Democrats have very little, if anything, to offer the people. Wiien Fresident Johnson said he wouldn’t be a candidate and that he wouldn’t accept a draft, I really thought he meant it. Now I don’t know. 1 still think this wily old pol itician still is angling for tne job. Time alone will tell. Boo by Kennedy is off and run ning, and I wish he would keep right on—out of the country. To show that he real ly is trying is proven by his gradually clipping his mane, to present a better image to the rank and file of the pop ulace. It will take more than hair cuts to make him presi dential timber, or at least that is the way I feel. He isn’t as good a man as McCarthy, and 1 don’t think he can make the grade either. By the time this hits print, I surmise that Hu bert Humphrey will also state he is running. His success will depend to quite a degree on what President Johnson says. If he puts his ful! support be hind him, I feel he could easily defeat Kennedy and Mc Carthy for the nomination. At the present time it looks as if Richard Nixon is the man the Renublicans will follow Of course, Rockefeller is still in the wings, biding his time, and most certainly will make a move at the convention to get the nomination. He as a candidate for president, and Ronald Reagen, as vice presi dent would make a formidable pair to beat. But, I still think that Nixon is the best man, and possibly the smartest in the ways of government eith er party has seeking to be President of the United States Time alone will tell the story. Hutchinson Truck Driver Escapes Injury Monday DETROIT — An unloaded logging truck owned by Herb Hutchinson of Mill City plung ed over about a 100 foot em bankment early Monday morning on the North San- tiam Highway about a mile East of Detroit, across from the State Highway Dept, building.
