Boatmen Conquer
Nehalem River
Gene Teague of Stayton re
ported that five craft chall
enged the Nehalem river re
cently and found that it was
a really rough river to run.
There were four regular
wooden river boats and one
rubber boat. Teague said all
of the craft made the run
without mishap, but that at
the Nehalem Falls it was nec
essary to let the boats down
by rope.
This expedition was led by
Gene Hansen of McMinnville
and Teague. Others from Stay
ton were Marvin Sandberg,
Dick Boedigheimer and Bill
Gehlen, Fred Graham, Ned
Uffelman, Alvin Norblad and
Dick Schroeder. The group
camped out and did some fish
ing on the trip, although the
fishing was not too good.
The boats were put in just
below the first bridge, and
they made the run clear to
tidewater, about 26 miles.
Teague said: “this river is
not too well known, and na
tives thought we were nuts
to try it. Some of the river is
real fast and just about like
an obstacle course.”
Many people never thought
of running rivers until the
