G«n, Ret. and Doc. Div. Newspapers, U of O Library The VOLUME XXIII ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY ■— OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND NUMBER 10 By »on Moffatt An 11-man presidential com mission has made a report to the President on the racial discrimination in our country. What they come up with is much of the same old thing. Spend, spend, spend, and this time it is something that is next to unrealistic. True, something has to be done to give the Negro a better educa tion, but I still thing that the Negro should be required to exert some effort to help him self. He can’t expect the gov ernment to turn over billions of dollars just for the benefit of a minority who will not help themselves. This commission starts out by recommending a boost in the federal minimum wage which jumped to $1.60 an hour only last month. At that time, the minimum wage was a farce, and did not help those it should help, so how can we expect a further in crease help the poor young fellow who has no training. Even in this affluent age, not many business men can afford to spend money on workmen unless they can see that workman making a profit for the firm. Another point is broadening the seven percent investment credit to give firms a tax inducement to locate new plants in slums and train slum workers. A third point means start ing a system of income sup plements which would in ef fect provide a guaranteed in come for people whether or not they worked. That would be a dandy one, wouldn’t it? I will agree that the prob lem of taking care of our pop ulation is huge, but how can we expect, or even suggest that the Federal government support each one of us. The federal government cannot produce wealth, all it can do is snend it. Someone has to earn it, and there are far too many getting government funds now and not producing any wealth to compensate for it. It just won’t work—and that makes no difference which party is in power in Washington.
