Shumway and his team in their research pro gram which resulted in the development of the heart transplant technique. Since 1952 over $1,540,000 has been allocated for heart disease research in Oregon by the Oregon Heart Association. The famous Starr-Edwards artificial heart valve is one of the important Oregon “firsts” credited with saving some 40,000 lives throughout the country — a scientific breakthrough directly attri buted to Oregon Heart’s re search support. The Associa tion leads the nation with ov er 60% of its funds allocated to research in Oregon.
