Friday Mixed Doubles Name or Team W 3—The Mill City Enterprise, Thursday, Feb. 22, 1968 point in the winter inventory of big game animals. Bob Stein, staff biologist who heads the big game pro gram for the Game Commis sion, reported that weather has been generally mild so far this winter except for a short period of deep snow and cold during December. Since that time weather has moder ated, and most winter ranges are relatively free of snow. Range conditions appear fair, Stein said, and if mild weather prevails for the next two months, deer, elk, and nntulope should come through the winter with a minimum of loss. Stein was somewhat pess imistic since the next two months are the most critical in relatioin to survival of the animals, and potential severe weather still poses a threat. In some areas food supplies are less than normal, and con tinued good weather will be necessary if herds are to sur vive with a minimum of loss. He mentioned that some deer herds in eastern Oregon ap peared a little ragged, and some elk herds in southwes- tern Oregon were also becom ing somewhat lean. Stein reported that compos ition is complete on deer and shows well-balanced herds comparable to last year. Class ification of black-tailed deer shows 66 fawns and 41 bucks per 100 does, while the mule deer in eastern Oregon aver ages 65 fawns and 19 bucks per 100 does. In both areas fawn production and survival is slightly below a year ago, while the buck ratio is up slightly. During February, March, jmd April, biologists will tray, el extensively on all big gámé winter ranges to obtain the annual trend counts, accord ing to Stein. The census counts plus classification pro vide the Game Commission with an overall population status of the herds.
