Gen. Ret. and Doc. Div. Newspapers, U of O Library 97403 ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND VOLUME XXII NUMBER 43 Up and Down The Avenue . Bv Don Moffatt ........................ .. You will be able to sleep for an additional hour this coming Sunday before you go to church, as daylight saving time ends this Saturday, or early Sunday. When you go to bed Saturday night, re member to set your clocks back one hour, then we will again be operating on Pacific Standard time. That is one way to say that the summer is over, as it will be dark when we go home from work next week. Abraham Lincoln said: “YOU CANNOT bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift, nor strengthen the weak by weakening the strong, nor help small men by tearing down big men, nor help the poor by destroying the rich, nor help the wage earner by pulling down the wage-payer, nor keep out of trouble by spending more than your income, nor furth er the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred, nor es tablish sound security on bor rowed money, nor build char acter and courage by taking away man’s initiative and in dependence, nor help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves!” Isn’t it too bad that we can’t have a Lincoln in the White House today? Of course he would have a lot more opposition now than he had in his day, because then, people were accustomed to doing for themselevs. That was before big government became the “wailing wall” for everyone who had a belly ache or who had run into a bit of bad luck. I often won der just what would happen if about half of these welfare type programs were cut out. There would be a real hue and cry from the populace hut the time will come when it must happen. THE MILL CITY ENTERPRISE—MILL CITY, OREGON Wolverines To be Held Oct. 31 Win Seventh At Detroit School Game in Row The Wolverines won their seventh straight game of the season by downing Philo math 27-14 on Allen Field Friday night. The Warriors got the first score of the game on a 60- yard pass to Dan Anderson. The PAT was good and Phil omath went ahead 7-0. The Wolverines didn’t let down, as they marched down the field and Mark Bennett scored on a five-yard run and kicked the PAT to tie the game. The next Wolverine score came on a one-yard run by Monte Lalack, but it was called back because of a hold ing penalty. The next play Mark Bennett connected with Alan Yankus for 10 yards and the T. D. The kick was good and Santiam led 14-7. The Wolverines dug in to hold a 14-7 halftime lead. The Wolverines determin ed to win scored again on a 35-yard punt return by Denny Cline. The PAT was again good, putting Santiam in the lead 21-7. The Warriors also fired up, marched down the field where Dan Anderson again scored for Philomath. Ander son added the extra point and put Philomath within seven points of Santiam once more. The hall exchanged hands several times before the Wol verines scored their final TD on a four-yard run by Monte Lalack. The PAT failed but the Wolverines held a 27-14 lead until the final gun. The Wolverines (5-0) trav el to Gervais (4-1) to play the game which should decide who will meet the Major league winner. — ; Faulty Bus Brake Brings Out Mehama Did you know that the gov ernment spends more than Volunteer Firemen $425 million a year on its pub lic information, news, views, and self - pleadings — more than double the outlay for news-gathering by the two major U. S. news services, and three major television networks, and the 10 biggest American newspapers. Much of this huge expenditure as reported by the Associated Press is devoted to convincing Americans (with their own money) what the government does is for their welfare. And again I say, why take land out of timber production and designate it only to re creation and wilderness? Let’s keep it as much as possible in multiple use management and whenever possible leave it in private ownership which has the added benefit of pay ing taxes. Personally, I wish all of the timber in the coun try were privately owned. When it comes to cutting the budget, I wish President Johnson AND Congress would quit passing the buck. I wish each would do his part in cutting out the frills of gov ernment. I do not think we can make a blanket cut on the budget and come up with a sensible document. I do, however, believe that a lot of fat could he cut out of the best programs, and the worth ies ones should be eliminated altogether. Just pointing the finger at the President is not sufficient to do the job. Each one in Washington, D. C. will have to settle down and take his own share of the blame for spending huge sums of money that are not available, thus causing inflation. Two Santiam High School Boys were discussing girls the other day. Said one: “Why do you make such a fuss over girls? Don’t you know a girl is only a rag, some bone, and a hank of hair?’’ "So.” said his friend, “shake hands with a happy junk dealer.” By Jean Roberts MEHAMA — The Mehama Fire department was a little confused about an alarm Fri day night, but answered it none the less. The siren blew and Fire Chief Gene Coles announced a “bus” fire. The volunteer department thinking he said “brush” fire were somewhat reluctant to answer a brush fire alarm in the midst of a pouring rain, but hastily came to the fire hall anyway. It was a Stayton school bus enroute home from a foot ball game, and the brake lin ing was afire. The dry chem ical fire extinguisher on the bus was not effective when used for this type of fire. A wheel bearing was faulty and friction had heated the brake and welded it to the drum. In this type of fire a cool ing agent, such as water, is the only effective means of suppressing a fire explained Coles. The volunteer department had a large audience of young people as they extin guished the blaze. Only 36 Voters Turn Out for School Election There were only 36 people voting Monday for a director for a five-year term on the newly-formed Linn • Benton Intermediate Education Dis trict. Hobart McQueary of Sweet Home was running unoppos ed in Zone 1. There are seven zones in the district. There were 13 votes cast at Gates, one a write-in. There were 23 votes cast for McQueary in Mill City. No advance notice of this election was published in The Mill City Enterprise, possibly a reason for the poor showing at the polls.
