“V w he Mill City Enterprise ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND VOLUME XXII NUMBER 42 THE MILL CITY ENTERPRISE—MILL CITY, OREGON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1967 $3.50 a YEAR — 10c a Copy I Water Is Topic of Davis Talk Ssfltidffl Ibf *«!"' On Top of Up and Down m»< »-■»* ■ . ■ . ................... .. .... School Administrator Bill Lewellen said today that the total school millage in Mill City has dropped again this year. This makes four years in a row that the millage has been lowered. This makes a good picture when millage in other towns has been on the increase. Lewellen said increased in valuation is part of the rea- son. School millage in Mill City for the past four years has been as follows: 1964-65, 52.8; 1965-66, 51.9; 1966-67, 47.7; and 1967-68, 46.22. We notice now that the Wilderness proposal on Mt. Jefferson has been increased over the Forest Service pro posal by some 1,000 acres. 1 wonder why the Forest Service is agreeing to any increase. They had a plan laid out that to their belief was a good sound plan, and they should stick to it. Just how much Congress will bend to satisfy the Sierra club and other outdoor groups is not known at this time, but I do know that every tree that is locked up by these groups works a hardship on every person who makes his liveli hood from our forests. I would recommend that every businessman, logger and in dividual in the state write to President Johnson, all our representatives, and protest to any move that would in crease the size of the Mt. Jef ferson Wilderness area, It may not seem important to yon now, but if this area is increased to the extent pro- posed by the outdoor clubs, enough timer will be tied up to affect the jobs of 100 men. Anyone interested in finding out to whom they should write, may have the informa tion by contacting The Enter prise. Stayton, past chair man and member of the State Water Resources board talk I on the topic of water at their I meeting at Gates Tuesday I night. Davis has been on the state board for the past 13 years and is the only origin al member of the board. He said Oregon, Washing ton and Idaho have what ap pears, at least to some states, to be a surplus of water. This might or might not be ■ so, but Oregon has spent 'some $500,000 making a sur vey, which should be ready for release this fall. Mr. Da vis is of the opinion that there is no surplus of water in this state and that vigil ance is necessary to block transporting water from the Columbia to California or any other state. In relating the cost of put ting water in the irrigation ditches of Arizona from the First enlisting in the Navy Columbia Davis said it would at the Naval and Marine cost $35 to $45 per acre foot.
