Newspapers, ’’ of O Library 97403 The Enterprise ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY —OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND VOLUME XXH NUMBER 36 Up and Down The Avenue By Don Moffatt This Thursday is the big day for schools in Mill City. Registration is expected to be about the same as last year. One thing the officials of our school can be reasonably sure of is that they will have little of the trouble that plagues schools in larger cities, and that is the problem of long hair on the boys, and too short dresses on the girls. The young people of Mill City in the past have been more or less conservative in their dress, and certainly do have letter manners than many children of larger cent ers. We have a few, of course, who seem to have a little trouble conforming to the standards set by our school, but they are no problem. The school publishes a small handbook of rules, and each student can easily find out what he has to do to conform to the high standards set by our school. One thing for sure here, is we don’t have to watch which rest room the young people enter to tell whether they are boys or girls. What a bles sing. THE MILL CITY ENTERPRISE—MILL CITY, OREGON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 7, 1967 $3.50 a YEAR — 10c a Copy Fire Fighters Control All Major Blazes Detroit Fires Appear To Be Controlled sent to the fire lines there. Oregon Office of Emergen cy Services maintained a communications base at Hoo doo Bowl and kept its civil defense center open in the Capitol as a direct commun ications link to and from the fire fighting area. Deschutes CD Director Bill James manned the field base. Teams of women usually working in two shifts at the local restaurants and the school, made thousands of sack lunches to be dispatch ed to the fire lines. The gym served as sleeping quarters for fire fighting crews and school buses were used for transportation. Fire crews were moved out of the gym Sunday preparatory to the opening of school Tues. Even though everyone con nected with the fire was working long, hard hours, there was a humorous side, too. A crew from Rogue River Inter-Regional from the Star Ranger station, Jacksonville, Oregon, feeling the need for clean clothing solved the pro blem by draping large green bath towels around them selves, and washing all of their clothing at the local Wash & Dry. They looked like little green men from Mars. A supply man noting a large kettle of eggs boiling in the kitchen of one of the cafes remarked, I hope the hens don’t slow down on the production line now. One of the girls on the lunch bri gade, hearing that a busload of beatniks had been brought in on the Buck Mountain fire, quipped, well, they came to the right place for a quick shave and a short hair cut. A man noting his cigarette lighter was out of fluid said he guessed he would have to rup up on the ridge and get a light.
