The Mill City
ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND
VOLUME XXII
NUMBER 21
THE MILL CITlF ENTERPRISE—MILL CITY, OREGON
River Guides Signing North Santiam
Up and Down Lyons Ph0(16 Safeco Insurance
I
It has been said and proven
too that no country has a
press equal to that of the
United States. There are
some 10,000 small newspapers
like The Mill City Enterprise
scattered over the length and
breadth of this land of ours
which represents a body of
independent thought that is
indispensable to the preser
vation of our economic and
political liberty. There has
been a lot of talk about reg
ulation and restriction of ad
vertising. It takes no great
imagination to see the con
nection between advertising
regulation and press censor
ship. It takes a lot of money
to keep a newspaper going
these days, and everyone
knows that the main source
of revenue comes from ad
vertising—so if the govern
ment can take this right of
a merchant away, and this
portion of revenue away from
the newspapers, they can con
trol the press. This would be
the main step in the downfall
of our country.
People in Mill City and
other small cities in our coun
try are interested in knowing
about their friends’ going
and comings, births, wed-
dings, and all sorts local
happenings. They know that
we have stores in our town,
but they also like to see what
they have to offer in their
advertisements. The day of
the merchant who said: “they
know where I am” is long
gone. The progressive mer
chant advertises to invite the
public to his store. We need
less regulation from the gov
ernment, not more, if we
are to continue to be a strong
nation.
