.MU. — -** Newspaper«. U of O Library 97403 Enterprise ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND VOLUME XXII NUMBER 12 THE MILL CITY ENTERPRISE—MILL CITY, OREGON Girl of the Month Up and Down The Avenue By Don Moffatt Easter Sunday is regarded by untold millions around the earth as the world’s most im portant religious holiday. One of the most joyous days of the year, it symbolizes the re awakening of life that is uni versally associated with Springtime. The present-day parades that mark the day had their beginning in the original Easter walk of Europe, when devout men and women con gregated and walked in an orderly manner thro ugh town and into the open coun try, stopping along the way to recite prayers and sing Easter hymns. Today in many American communities, elaborate East er parades find women and children in their new finery— the husbands and fathers go ing along for the walk. And one of the most charming of all customs is the Easter egg hunt for the children, and this is sponsored annually by the Jaycees here, when many eggs are hidden in the city park, much to the enjoyment of the youngsters of the area. Easter combines a rich mix ture of laughter and solemn ity. Both are good—and both are needed by the soul of man. Probably many of you do not know how to determine which is Easter Sunday. I found this explanation in case you didn’t know or needed reminding. Easter comes on the first Sunday after the date of the first full moon that occurs on or after March 21, that makes it fall on March 26 this year. And the first day of Spring comes on 21. That makes it fall on ver know it by our weather last weekend. This year, let each one of us worship in the church of our choice on this day which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Sandra Cooper was chosen girl of the month for Santiam High school for the month of February. She is also San- tiam’s Salutatorian. Sandra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albin Cooper. Sandra has been active in many school activities during her four years at Santiam, among these are Pep club, 4 years; GAA 4 years; Cheer leader, 2 years; FT A, 2 years; school play, 2 years; Fresh man class vice pres, Junior class secretary; Co-editor of the school paper and Senior year Student Body treasurer. She also received the Junior Citizen of the Year Award, sponsored by the Linn County Veterans’ Council and the Good Citizen Award, given by the Daughters of the Americ an Revolution. Sandra is planning to at tend the U of O and major in sociology. Upon completion of her college studies, she is hoping to go into the field of social work. Mari-Linn Budget Is Increased LYONS — Mari-Linn school budget board approved a 1967- 68 district budget which calls for a 12% increase. Superin tendent Curt Benefiel said the district valuation would be up and should compensate for the $15,000 budget increase, but he had no estimate of the millage effect at this time. The appioved budget total $140,103 in the general fund, up $125,213 for the current year. Greatest increase came in faculty salaries. Though no additional teacher positions will be needed next year, the school board has approved a salary schedule with a $5,700 base pay and $200 annual in crement for teachers. This necessitated the increase from $62.100 this year to a proposed $70,000 in the instructional category next year. Administrative costs, in cluding Benefiel’s salary, will total $14,000 in comparison to $11,960 this year. Transporta tion costs are expected to drop to $9,775 from $10,375 this year. A public hearing on the budget will be held April 10 with election on May 1. Nat.
