Interested in your column “Up and Down the Avenue", but from our old-time stand point, not only the “Avenue” but the entire country Is on the “Down-grade". It might be well at some of your “visitation day” meetings to have the lawmakers of Ore gon get down to brass tacks— get away from politics now that the election is long past. In other words, have the Gov ernor, speakers of both the House and Senate, find out first hand, that there Is a much better way than consid ering the so-called “Sales Tax” and "increase in state income tax" and consider the tried and found successful GROSS INCOME TAX. Under date of January 4, 1967 I am in receipt of a state ment of State of Indiana re leased by Tax Department advising that their gross in come tax program has been in existence since 1933. The state also added an Adjusted Gross Income Tax. The long existing Gross Income Tax now applies to corporations while the Ad justed Gross Income Tax is directed to individuals. The latter tax follows the federal tax laws to a point in deter mining one’s adjusted gross income. Adjusted Tax as well as Gross Income Tax is levied at the rate of 2 percent. The Indiana Gross Income Tax revenue has expanded from $4 million in 1933 to $246 million in 1964. With the complimen tary Adjusted Gross Tax each tax now provides around $125 million per year. Signed by Frank A. Klinkose, Admin istrator. These facts in brief were submitted to Governor McCall, speaker of the House and Sen ate, and also the Interim Tax Committee, and as yet they have just “brushed them un der the carpet”. Thus they have done a gross disservice to the taxpayers and those who elected them. Instead to date we’ve had McCall’s “Im aginative tax plans’’. This would not solve all the state's problems; It’s rap idly dissapearing timber re sources, Oregon’s record fail ures, bankruptcies, etc., but it would help. It would put this Gross Income Tax money in at the grassroots where it is now sorely needed. As an aside, we might add that former Mill City resident Bob Quinn, who used to work with me back in the Ham mond days in Mill City 1925- 1926 is now a famous coach, and just may make a visit to meet old friends that are left.
