ON THE SCENIC NORTH S ANTI AM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND
NUMBER 4
VOLUME XXII
Up and Down
The Avenue
Ry Don Moffatt
Saturday was visitation day
at Mill City when our Linn
State Representatives, Gerald
Detering, accompanied by his
wife, Marie, and Bill Gwinn
met people who wish to dis
cuss legislative matters which
may be taken up at this ses
sion. The meeting was held in
The Enterprise office. State
Senator Glen Huston had also
planned to make his appear
ance here, but other committ
ments made this impossible.
About a dozen citizens from
the area were present.
To my way of thinking this
is how legislators should
work. This is what I call real
grassroots com munication
with constituents. Both Deter
ing and Gwinn are to be com
plimented on their desire to
find out what the people are
thinking. They said they may
slate another meeting here
later in the year.
This hassle between some
of the people, the Forest Ser
vice and the “conservation
ists" is really hurting this
North Santiam Area. When
it was learned last week at a
meeting of the North Santiam
Chamber of Commerce that a
moratorium had been placed
on certain areas adjacent to
the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness
area, it stirred up a lot of com
ment as it well should have.
When the facts were sifted
out it was learned that the
moratorium would take some
11 per cent of the allowable
cut of timber in the Mill City
and Detroit districts. This is
a sizable amount of timber.
I visited one night with a
r logger in this area and he said
that to harvest the 10,900,000
board feet of timber would
take the labors of about 20
men for a full year. Mind you,
this is just for harvesting of
the timber. This does not fi
gure the hauling of the logs,
the processing the trees into
lumber ready for market.
When you consider the mill
men and others connected
with the harvesting of this
amount of timber, about 100
men would be affected. It will
affect county government too,
as the estimated sales value of
this much timber would come
to some $640,800, of which 25
per cent goes to the county.
The moratorium was placed
on this area, because of the
large number of people who
testified in favor of expanding
the Wilderness area. Officials
evidently did not take into
consideration the fact that the
hearings were packed with
people in favor of the increase
and many who make their liv
ing from this timber never
got a chance to testify. Those
who are affected by “ty
ing up” of timber land should
and must get organized and
put up a concerted effort to
have this land released and
kept out of the Wilderness
area.
An item taken from the
Western Timber Industry
was given to me this week. In
it there was are article to the
effect that the Sierra Club
contributions will not be tax
exempt by the Internal Re
venue Service, because of the
lobbying activities carried out
by the club. The club was giv
en 30 days to make an appeal
before the ruling becomes fin
al. The Sierra club claims
to have lost $125.000 in contri
butions since the IRS first an
nounced that it would revoke
the organization’s tax status.
The Sierra club and other
outdoor clubs no doubt do a
lot of good, but I do feel that
they are getting over ambi
tious in tying up timber land.
It is going on all over the
country. Soon, unless it is
brought to a halt, the conver-
vationists will have all the
land tied up. and there will be
nothing left to be utilized by
the general public.
