GIFTS GALORE The Bus Drivers' Christmas Story 7—The Mill City Enterprise, Thursday, Dec. 22, 1966 By Jean Roberts The telephone rang one night and a young voice ask ed, “May I take a Christmas tree on the bus, to school in the morning?” Not wanting to dampen a child’s Christmas spirit I obligingly said, “Of course,” thinking silently that there would be some way to stand a small tree in the corner, or between two seats while some of the 48 passeng ers doubled up. The next morning when the usual passengers were picked up, my heart sank as I saw two small boys, their faces scrubbed and shining, proudly standing by their Christmas tree. It was a beautiful fir, the branches were thick and glossy—and the trunk was six inches in diameter. “A perfect ly good saw log,” was my thought as I wondered how to get this evergreen giant into the bus, The boys already had it planned. “We’ll open the emergency door in the rear,” they said, “and drag it in that way.” While the warning buz zer raucously sounded, the boys dragged the tree in, and climbed in behind it. Looking back, the tree filled the bus, and still 45 young sters to pick up. By the time we got to school the tree was properly decorated with a youngster on every branch, but no one seemed perturbed; it smelled nice. Getting it out was some what of a task, but everyone gave a hand because what is Christmas without a tree? Christmas will come, and Christmas will go, but I’ll probably sweep fir needles forever. 1966 To our friendsTìTìXyy Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Hutch inson took their daughter, Mrs. Leroy Richards to Port land Sunday where she left by plane at noon to Join her husband at Frankfurt, Germ any.
