LETTERS TOTEE EDITOR Mr. Editor: In view of the fact that sev eral people are concerned be sides myself in the rumors that are being circulated about the handling of City business I will set the record straight. When K & K built the houses in Crest View Addi tion the City grader and dump truck were used from time to time. The rock that was hauled and the time put in by the grader were paid for at the same rate that any cit izen would be charged. The City records will show this and I have paid receipts and cancelled checks to prove the same. The work of hauling and grading that was done on my personal home by city equipment was paid for at the usual rate as the city records and my cancelled checks will show. All of this could have been ascertained from the above sources if the information had really been desired. J. C. KIMMEL Dear Don: I read your “letter to the Editor” last w»ek, and think that certainly w as good advice that Mr. “Chief Taylor” gave to your readers about driving conditions and how to over come the adverse ones. Com ing from him I couldn’t help chuckling a bit. Please, Chief Taylor, it hasn’t been long since you gave a demonstra tion right in the heart of Mill City as to your ability to make these little turns to the left when you were skidding to the left, etc. You landed bot tom side up and had to be rescued by some Mill City Pedestrians that were lucky not to be in the way as you went screeching to your call of duty. Please “Chief Taylor” don’t tell us again the story about the six volt siren on a 12 volt battery causing the accident, so far I haven’t found anyone that will believe that story. Don, I have lived in Mill City almost 45 years and am proud to live here. It is get ting a little embarrasing at times to admit that I am from Mill City when someone asks about some of the police exploits that happen here. This is the first time that I can remember that so many citizens are interested in our city government, which is being proven by the fact that there are so many running for councilman. I think that the present council and all the past coun cilmen should be congratulat ed on their faithful and con scientious efforts to make Mill City a good place to live. At the same time I think that some of the new candidates that are really interested in a certain part of that govern ment should be given a chance to prove their ability. This coming from Tex Bla zek probably sounds just as funny as some of the things that happen here in Mill City. I probably am not the most super civic-minded person in Mill City, but I’ve heard this discussed so often and hear of it so often that I took a dare and am writing this to be published. Very truly, Frank Blazek. EXPERIENCED RESPONSIBLE EFFECTIVE THE HEARTHSIDE Your Social Security LINN COUNTY RE-ELECT BILL GWINN p 9—The Mill City Enterprise, Thursday, Nov. 8, 1966 I Property Tax Relief is a Must, a Home Owners Tax Credit can be done here in Oregon. As a property own in Western Canada I know how it Is done. Alberta Pro vidence paid $50.00 1965-66. British Columbia $110.00 1965-66. Remember size of population about same, tim ber is No. 1 industry both areas, many other features same except B. C. much larger land size. Payments to local governments were $319,536,000. In 1965-66, com pared to $260,927,000 1964-65, record 1965 timber cut better yet 1966 forecast, no tight money, high Federal Income Tax to pay. Same time, providence gross pro ducts increased $580 million for 1965, expenditures to education up $31,866,740 over 1964, new industries and payrolls, road, other improvements up. Tourist to num ber 5.2 million spent $201 million. Yes something can be and must be done here in Oregon, as other areas are doing. The Willamette Valley will make tremendous growth within the next 50 years so we must look, plan, and work towards the futuie. We must keep and make use of Oregon’s surplus water for our present and future needs, such as power, irrigation, industry, and recrea tion. We must work towards prevention of pollution of our streams and rivers and still keep our industry and payrolls. Other areas are faced with same prob lem, by cooperation of all parties concerned this job can be accomplished. By keeping our waters fresh and clean, with growing populations the outdoors is a MUST; fish ing, twating, other types of recreation can be enjoyed by all people. Broaden the Welfare-Work-Training Program that will include all ablebodied men, a lot more can be under taken that will not interfere with county and private employes, such as County and City Parks, tree planting, brush and weed cutting along rural and surburban roads and many other projects. Mt. Jefferson Park area has around 20,000 acres in Marion County, with ajoining county and state a lot of work could be done this way with out costing the taxpayers extra money, an example. Keep the People fully informed on any plan such as Home Rule which would abolish many elective offices and make appointive, KEEP THE PEOPLE’S RIGHT TO ELECT THEIR OWN OFFICIALS. Closer lies with all of Marion County from the County Court House, County Wide participation in all Affairs of County government, Planning Commissions, Council of Governments (Marion & Polk Counties, City of Sal em, Salem School District & State of Oregon) which has provisions for other areas to be included, I say all of Marion County pays property and other taxes, all be included. Encourage development of more new industry and payrolls for our growing county, more markets for our timber, agricultural products, promote and sell our County. As the only TAX CONSULTANT in Pos. No 1 County Commissioner race, working with hundreds of tax re turns meeting many taxpayers from all west coast states and other areas, I know the tax structure of these states. I say do not be fooled by some politicians that we need SALES TAX in Oregon, take California for example, approximately 47, sales tax, many counties additional 1% some cities extra 1% and yet California has HIGH EST PROPERTY TAXES IN NATION. The trouble is that too much of our hard earned tax money goes to Washington I). to finance, Foreign Aid, Poverty program* and other Give A ways. Heres some examples; $600.000.00 in New York Poverty Program not accounted for $500,000.00 OEO project not accounted for; OEO training projects, 459 employes to train 328 corpsmen; Camp Breckenridge, Ky„ Camp Cary, Texas 1100 em ployes to train 2457 trainies while public schools Texas 1 teacher to 20 students; at Tongue Point, Oregon ac cording to OEO official. $17,500.00 per corpsman, and many more items of real concern to you and I, space does not permit me to enclose, but I have this informa tion gladly to share with you. _ _ I fully agree with some of our Congressmen from both parties that “TOO many tax dollars are going to Wash ington, D. C„ the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, that rightfully belong to you and me the taxpayers.” What “cooks the cake ” is a example like this, a story of two brothers, 1 a model student, 1st in his class, was drafted to fight in Viet Nam for $78.00 per month, his other brother, a school drop out, has beaten up his mother and teachers, gets $178.00 per month for raking leaves at golf course as a Job Corpsman, this just dirty pol itics and thats why your property, state, and local tax es are so high. You and I alone cannot untangle this mess, but if we as Americans unite and stick together, elect men and women regardless of party for County, City, State and Federal offices there will not be nearly so much money to go to Washington, D. C. Having been with the timber & Plywood industry (Simpson Timber Co.) for over 11 years, 1 too am familiar with the T!ght Money Problem. Did you know that American Taxpayers money is loaned out to other countries for 1% for the first 10 years, 2%% for 30 years. Here in Oregon many people cannot build or buy, tim ber industry has many layoffs, shut downs of plants, millions $$$$$ losses to employers and employees, money hard to get, Inv, Credits taken away, hamper new construction, equipment expansion, plus HIGHEST INTEREST RATE OVER 40 years. OREGON was promised by the Federal Government ex tra 469 million feet thru special thinning and salvage from BLM Forest Service. This would cost them BLM & FS average $5.00 per thousand, returns be $20.00 Oregon & $30.00 Western Ore., cost $839,000.00 return to Government (You & Me) the taxpayers $6.5 million dollars, what happened NOT I CENT WAS APPRO PRIATED FOR OUR HARD DEPRESSED TIMBER INDUSTRY, make available timber that will go to waste for our operators and employes, but remember $3.5 Billion foreign aid and $1% Billion povery program. I say its about time we as citizens will awaken to the fact that tis ones duties to stand together and be count ed, fight for whats right, and I for my part am getting tired of seeing our State of Oregon getting the short end all the time. I do not claim to know all the answers but I work hard for a living, a property owner here and in Canada, am not afraid to meet the issues squarely, not a yes man or obligated to party bosses. Believe in the good old Amer ican free enterprise way, more local control, less Fed eral control, every public official duties. City, County, State, or Federal to keep the people fully informed of whats going on here and abroad, always looking for new ideas, new ways to make America and Marion County a good place to live. We don’t need more review boards, more Supreme Court decisions to smear our law men, instead more respect for law and order, with crime increasing daily, tieing the hands of our lawmen will mean more lawlessness, riots and disorders. Instead of banning Prayers in school (optional) we should take some of this trash off newstands that polute and cor rupt our youth minds.
