Esther and Earnest Prescriptions Our Specialty DETROIT Logging Slash IDANHA Disposal Studied Study of logging slash dis Free posal in the National Forests of Oregon and Washington has been stepped up by the assignment of two men to work with the Forest Ser vice’s Pacific Northwest Reg ion. John Dell and Frank Ward, both from Riverside, Cali fornia, Forest Fire Research laboratory, are now station ed in Portland to carry out studies in the Douglas-fir reg ion of western Oregon and western Washington. The men will study tree ef fects of slash burning (in cluding air pollution), the techniques and timing of burning hazardous waste ma terial, fire behavior and means of disposal other than burning, including greater utilization. Timber harvest in the Douglas-fir region creates ap proximately 125,000 acres of slash annually. This slash of ten constitutes a serious wild life hazard if not disposed of by burning or other means. Dell and Ward will work with personnel of the Nat ional Forest west of the Cas cades to gather data, develop improved methods, test sys tems, and determine costs of various methods of slash hazard reduction. The program is sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Reg ion and Pacific Southwest Forest & Ranger Experiment Station, Berkeley, California. Dear Don: I think the following would Le beneficial to your readers. Winter weather is here, and with it comes hazardous driv ing conditions. Fog, slippery highways, and more hours of darkness all play their part in increasing traffic accidents. Here are some safety tips: When fog is ahead, slow down. Turn headlights on low beam; don’t follow other cars too closely; keep both hands on the wheel; and use the white shoulder line to posi tion your car. Keep a rag handy to wipe off windows. If you must stop in fog or snow for any reason, pull as far off the highway as you possibly can. If the highway is slippery with snow or ice, drive as if you are handling eggs—slow and steady with no sharp turns or sudden stops. Get out of dangerous skids by turning your wheel in the same di rection as the skid. For ex ample, if the rear end of your car skids left, steer left. If it skids right, steer right. Night driving with it’s re duced visibility calls for ex tra caution Drive slower, stay well behind the car ahead, and always dim head lights when meeting or fol lowing other vehicles. Keep your eyes peeled for pedes trians, turn signals from other cars, and vehicles pulling out of side streets.
