GATES By Mrs. Floyd Bwaim Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Mulligan visited from Wednesday to Sunday at the Portland home of his brother and wife, the Otto Mulligans. The Willard Howell family is in the process of moving back into their Gates home after nearly two years at Rockaway where he was log ging. The children registered for school Monday. Mrs. Clyde Oliver returned Saturday night from Portland where she had visited the weekend with her daughter- in-law, Nina Oliver and the new baby while Jack Oliver • was on a business trip in Jackson, Miss. Mrs. Ed Kadin spent Mon day to Wednesday of last week visitihg at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Conrad of Portland. Mrs. Jack Evans, Paula and Jackie and Rebecca Savage were guests for three days re cently at the home of her mo ther, Mrs. Leroy Virgin at Seaside. The occasion was Mrs. Virgin’s birthday anni versary and the group arrived with a cake and gift for her. They also visited with Mrs. Evans’ sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilcox and three children. The weather being especially nice, a lot of time was spent on the beach. Mrs. Grant Layer and Mrs. June Haueter, with Mrs. June Hansen of Portland, enjoyed a hunting trip at Otis Kent last week. They rented a cabin out in the area they were hunting and really had a ball, Mrs. Haueter said. No deer were bagged, but the novelty of the experience, combined with the beautiful scenery, made for a most enjoyable trip. However, bad news was waiting for Mrs. Haueter when she got home. Her nephew, Ronald Chavarria, the 14-year-old son of her sister, Mrs. Barbara Chavarria of Klamath Falls, had been shot and killed in a hunting accident Sunday. The Mel Eide’s are having some clearing done on the property they bought this year from the heirs of Creta Olt. They plan to seed some pasture in preparation for beef stock next spring. Mrs. Eide said the Roger Minks of Mill City will be moving into the house after some remodel ing is finished. Irvin Tucker and John Tay lor, with Terry Murphy of Sa lem spent last weekend goose hunting at Summer Lake. They brought home four honkers. Friday visitors at the James Siegfried home were Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Clark of Beaver ton. The Siegfrieds took their guests on a tour of the Can yon. The tour was repeated Sunday for the benefit of more guests who were her sister, Mrs. Ramona Hall of Portland, her cousin and an aunt from Vancouver, Wn., Mrs. Evelyn Campbell and Mrs. George Bailey and an other aunt, Mrs. Martha Fah of Washougal, Wn. Mrs. Bob Blumenstein has been going to Salem evenings to see her mother, Mrs. Lewis Bonnett, who is a patient at Salem General hospital. Mrs. Bonnett suffered a light stroke October 10, but is re covering satisfactorily. Carol Blumenstein is staying at the Bonnett home to keep house for her grandfather. The Gunter Clines and their son, Doug, spent last week end hunting near Heppner in the company of his brother- in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Krutsinger of Klamath Falls. Thursday dinner guests at the Bill Gabriel home were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mason of Sweet Home and her brother M/Sgt. Rich ard C. Mason, who was en route home to White Sands, N. M. after a year in Vietam. Mrs. Bill Gabriel and Ginger and her sister, Martha Taylor and two children of Idanha visited at the home of her par ents. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mason in Sweet Home Friday. They were joined there for dinner that evening by their husbands and the older child ren. Surprise visitors Saturday evening at the Gabriel home were Dr. and Mrs. Howard Dickson, Holly and Heidi of San Rafael, Calif. The Dick sons are spending a few days relaxing at their summer home at Detroit. Stevie Carey of Stayton weekended at the home of his grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Wilson, while his parents were in Eastern Oregon. Sunday guests at the Clare Rush home were their son, Lyle Rush and Brian and Ray Ritchie and Ed Mitchell, all of Salem. Wednesday afternoon visit ors at the Walter Thomas home were Mr. and Mrs. Barsch and four children of Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thom as visited Thursday in Port land at the home of his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Eph Thom as. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thom as and their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thomas Jr., enjoyed a weekend of hunting and camping in the Ochocos. Also in the party were Mrs. Walter Thomas Jr’s, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Bartlett of Salem and two cousins from Portland. One doe was taken by Mrs. Thomas Jr. Overnight guests Saturday at the home of Mrs. Sarah Rains were her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Long and Mr. and Mrs. Don ald Long, all of Roseburg, and Mrs. Charles Sueffrldge and daughter of Sutherlin. Guests Thursday and Fri day at the Arnold Dennis home were his cousin and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johns of Cataba. Wis. This was the Johns’ first visit here. A picnic was enjoyed at the coast Sunday when the Den nis family joined the Johns and Arnold’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dennis and Arnold’s sister’s family, the Jerry Can trells. The ladies were surprised with special birthday cakes ordered earlier by their hus bands and enjoyed a “Happy Birthday” organ serenade. Guests last week at the home of Mrs. Ethel Moses were her brother-in-law and sister, the Bill Burtons, of Santa Cruz, Calif. The three spent several days visiting at the Sheridan home of another sister. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Franzen. nual magazine sale. All mag azines are sold through the Curtis Circulation Company. Proceeds from the sale will be used to finance the activities that the classes sponsor throughout the year. The sale will continue through Oct ober 28 The shop and P. E. classes have furnished over thirty card tables to be used at school dances. Simpson Tim ber Company donated enough lumber to make all the tables. The tables will be stored at the school and any class 01 club will be able to use them. On October 13-15 the grade school and high school put on a series of three one act plays for the public. The grade school play was en titled. “Hold Back the Red skins.” It was directed by H. Bastuscheck. The two plays by the high school were, “Death of a Hired Hand.” and “The Rehearsal.” They were directed by Richard Ricketts. (Crowded Out Last Week) Homecoming princesses for the Homecoming Dance on Oct. 28, were announced this week. The Freshman princess is Shirley Stone, Sophomore princess, Debbie Chance, Jun ior princess, Kandee Henness, and Senior princess, Patti Eastwood. The queen will be crowned during the half-time activities at the Homecoming game. The Sophomore and Junior classes of Santiam are beginn ing their annual magazine sale. All magazines come through the Curtis Circulation Company. Money earned will be used for the activities that the classes sponsor through the year. The sale will last for three weeks. This week the shop classes have started making card tables for use at the school dances. The lumber was do nated by Simpson Plywood Co., to the school. Any class or club will be able to use the tables which will be stored at the school. Two touchdowns by Dennis Davidson, one by Bo Herron, and one by Mark Bennett tall ied up a winning score of 26, for the Wolverines, over the J. F. K. Trojans.
