Jerry Larson, now doing a tour of duty in Saigon. Jer ry, who was raised in Gates and went to school here, will be remembered by many in the area. Dear Gram, I guess it’s about time I wrote and let you know how I am getting along. I got here on the I3th and am all set tled in now. I have a very good job here. My office handles all the res cue missions for all aircraft down in S.E. Asia. It seems to be a very interesting, im portant and challenging job to be responsible for all ef forts to save downed crew members in North Viet Nam, South Viet Nam and sur rounding areas. I will have complete responsibility for all missions when I am on duty as controller. I have found a very nice and comfortable place to live. It will be with four other men, of whom one I will work with. It is a large house with separate bed and bath rooms, living room, dining room and kitchen. There is a cook and a maid who does all the laundry, cleans house, makes the beds and even shines your shoes each day. It will cost me about $160.00 a month for everything in cluding food which we buy at the commissary. I had a problem with my guns when I arrived. It is illegal to bring in private weapons. I had a large a- mount of paper work to get thru customs and to get them registered. I can keep them, but must keep them locked up. I will still use them if I feel it is necessary. I have some transportation already. A friend of mine brought me a Japanese mo torcycle in from Japan on a S-141, the airplane I was fly ing at Charleston. It is almost impossible to get around with out one here. About one of three Americans here have one. There is a curfew here. All military personnel must be off the streets by 11 p.m. and all civilians by 1 a.m. It is sure hot here. We are having the rainy season now. It finishes sometime in Octo ber and starts again in May. I have met several friends over here. I’ve been in so long now that I can’t go any where without meeting some one I know. I’ve run into at least 10 people whom I’ve known at one base or another where I’ve been stationed. The local people are quite friendly, but I don’t trust any of them. The way the situa tion is here, you never know who is a friend or enemy. Well, Gram, I must close now and get some sleep. I have to go to Da Nang to morrow to observe their res cue operation. I will then go to one of our detachments in Thailand. I will spend 3 or 4 days at each location to get a full insight of the total air rescue situation that is under our control here at Saigon. It should be an interesting trip. Take care of yourselves. Love, Jerry.
