GATES By Miw. FUyd Swain Dave Barnhardt and George Stafford spent Monday on a hunting (for the lake, that is) and fishing trip to Pinet Lake. Mrs. Barnhardt said it was Dave’s fourth attempt to find the lake, but they caught some nice fish, making it well worth the effort. Mrs. Julia Stoffel and Mrs. Verna Hunziker of Portland visited with the George Staf fords and other area relatives over the weekend. Visiting since Thursday at the Elmer Klutke residence are her great uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mns. Albert Kirkland of Orting, Wash. The Klutke's hosted a family dinner Mon day when additional guests were her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Tucker, Mrs. Gary Hulse and Billy and Minnie Hudgins, all of Portland, and Mrs. Klutke’s mother and husband, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Hudgins of Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Hudgins arrived from Arizona Saturday. Mrs. Hudgins will be returning home with him next week fol lowing a summer of employ ment at the Breitenbush Re sort. Tuesday visitors at the El mer Klutke home were Mr. and Mrs. Clay Kirkland of Sa lem. Recent houseguests for ten days at the home of Olive Sherman and Herba Scott were Mrs. Scott’s son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Randell Magee, Colleen and Kimberly of Chicago. During their stay the group enjoyed an overnite trip to the coast. The Magees had been visiting in Long Beach, Calif., before coming here. Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Skill ings have purchased the Art Hempeck home on Kings Prairie. AF Capt. Jerry Larson ar rived Sept. 1 to visit a few days at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bisbin, before going to Saigon where he expects to spend the next year flying air rescue missions. He had spent the previous week moving his wife Sylvia and children, Deb bie and Steve from Charles ton, S. C. to England to be near her parents at Bourne mouth during his year’s ab sence. A family picnic was held on Sunday at the State Park west of Mill City. At tending in addition to the Brisbins and Jerry were his sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wilson and four children of Mill City and his father and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Larrson of Brookings, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wilson and family of Estacada have purchased the former Harry Melton home in Mill City and spent Labor Day weekend get ting moved. They had spent the summer in their small trailer house near where he was working, southwest of Idanha. They plan to rent out their home at Estacada until a buyer can be found. Mrs. Grace MacDonald will be substituting for Olive Barn hardt in her first grade class at the Gates School the first two weeks of school while Mrs. Barnhardt is convalesc ing from recent surgery. Mrs. Margaret McWhirk was a patient at Santiam Memorial Hospital from Tues day to Saturday where she re ceived treatment for a severe case of bursitis. Arriving at her home for a week’s visit on Thursday were her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Errol McWhirk, Mike and Tina of Oak Harbor, Wash. He is sta tioned at Whidbey Island Na val Base. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kadin spent Monday and Tuesday of last week on business in Med ford. They also visited h i s brother’s families while there. Visiting at the Kadin’s home on Thursday were his broth er and family, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Nelson, Mary and Mike of Corvallis. Fire Chief Bob Kelle has announced there will be no Gates Fire Dept, buck derby this year. Discouragingly low ticket sales made last year’s derby unprofitable, he says. Terry Jacobson accompan ied his aunt. Iris Hoover of Mill City on a camping trip to Crater Lake from Saturday to Monday. The Allen Tourvilles have purchased a new home in Sa lem and spent the Labor Day weekend getting moved. He is employed at a Salem clinic as an x-ray technician.
