will be possible for at least a

As a result, Davis added,
forest industry employers are
confronted with fewer orders,

Old Buildings
Discussed at
Council Meet
A large audience was In at
tendance at the July meeting
of the City Council Wednes
day evening. Considerable
comment was made by them
regarding the unsightly build
ings, condition of vacant lots,
drainage problems in various
parts of town. Also receiving
unfavorable comment was the
fact that certain streets in
town are being used for race
tracks.
It was mentioned that in
dividual citizens should clean
up and beautify the city on
their own, with the backing
and support of the council.
Those present were in an am
iable mood and were trying to
offer constructive ideas to
make Mill City a more pro
gressive town.
In council action Merle Gar
ton was granted a building
permit to build a house on S.-
W. 3rd street in the 1000
block.
Ordinance No. 86 was adopt
ed which places Into effect the
tax on pin ball and electrical
ly operated machines.
James Dean Hagen ,who will
be a senior at Santiam High
school next year has been
hired as a police cadet in that
department. He will type re
ports, answer the phone and
do general office work. He is
paid by the federal govern
ment and will receive credit
towards police work.
At the November general
election a Mayor and five
councilmen are to be elected.
Anyone interested in running
for these offices may contact
Rex Ohmart, city recorder.
The petition form for these
offices must be in the hands
of the Recorder not more than
90 days nor less than 30 days
before the general election.
A qualified elector who has
i esided in the city during the
12 months immediatey pro
ceeding the election may be
nominated for an elective city
position. The Mayor is to be
elected for a two-year term
while the three councilmen
who receive the highest num
ber of votes shall serve a four-
year term and the two receiv
ing the next highest number
of votes will serve a two-year
term.
Teenage Dance Set
At Fire Hall for
Friday Night
Mrs. Marshall Worley said
this week that there were
alxiut 70 teen-agers out for the
dance held at the Firehall last
Friday.
Another dance will be given
this Friday but there will be
a small admission charge to
cover the cost of refresh
ments.
Mrs. Worley said the dance
would start at 8:30 but she
hoped to have the parents of
the youngsters come at 7:30
so that a discussion could be
held on the possibility of get
ting a youth recreation center
started: which nowadays usu
ally means plenty of dances
and "platter spinning."
