A summer employee of the
Willamette National Forest has
received an award of merit
and $300 for the heroic rescue
of a 15-year-old girl at Pamelia
Lake last July 27.

Leete Jackson. 19. of 3Stt» -1st.
Lubbock. Texas, was then em­
ployed on the Detroit Ranger
District as a guard at Pamelia
Lake Guard station. Jackson
received word of the award in
a letter from Forest Sucrpvisor
David R Gibney.
On July 27. by eye-witness
account, Jackson swam to the
aid of Merrilyn McDonald of
Salem. She and a friend had
poled a raft about 500 yards
out. when Merrilyn decided to
swim to shore About half way.
she was unable to go further
and called for help, according
to Mrs. George P. Lanning. Jr.,
of 2187 Bruce. N. E., sister of
the girl. Jackson then swam to
her rescue
Jackson attended
Lubbock
High school, graduated in 1961.
and is now a pre-dental student
at Texas Technological College
at Lubbeck.
Jackson had spent the sum­
mer of 1960 as a life guard at
the municipal pool in Lubbock,
