Tile decrease in millage Is due to the fact that IJnn County's value is now $114.124.129 or 9 2% above 1962 In the case <>f the Rural School district, the levy is one-half of the operat ing cost per pupil and the ; •mount of money the Assessor ! is ordered to raise Is $2,460,456 I or 117% above the amount I raised In 1962 This budget ; covers 604 more pupils am! the cost each is $9 68 more TTie | increase In Osinty value on which the Rural School district made Its levy was 9.5%, and this resulted in the increase of only 2 of a mill. All properties In IJnn County, whether they be In the cities, rural or Um bered areas, support these two county-wide levies, am! It is interesting to note, Brown said, that the sum of these two levies tor 1963 is lower than it was in 1962 Further comparing those two millages for the years 1962 and 1961 anti applying to a $10,000 property with a $2.500 assessed value, the tax would show as tielow for each year. 1962 Millage Tax 9.9 $24 75 County Rural School 22.1 55 25 1963 County Rural School $80 H0 Millage Tax 323.00 9.4 55.75 22.3 $79 25 To further sltow the influence of the appraisal program had the county property valuations for these two levies for 1962 been the same in 1963, a $10.000 property located anywhere in the county would have paid $8.25 more as a result of the increased budget demands, said Assessor Brown. The State Tax Commission through Its timber cruise and its uUlity valuations and the IJnn County appraisal program including the normal growth at the county, Increased county assessed valuation by $9.641,000. and this has had the effect of holding down millages. To il lustrate. had last year’s valua tion been used, on a $10,000 pro- perty the county levy would have required $25.75 and the rural school levy would have required $61.75 on this proper ty, totaling $87 50, or $ 8.25 more than this property will have to pay due to the valua tion Increase brought about throught the assessment pro gram. It would lie opportune to note that the services of the asses sor’s » office onice in establishing earaoi sning val- vai- uations for tax hwy districts, in mapping and legal records ne cessary to protect property owners, and In the complex liookkoeping system required to make the levies ordered by levying authorities arc a total annual coat of $1.40 on a $10,- 000 pn»pcrty. Mr. Wilson said today that they still have to get the planer and edger into operation be fore the mil) will really be ef ficient. When completed the mill should cut about 50.000 board feet a day. Seven men are employed at the mill at the present time. Another five men are employed on the woods crew. Mr. Wilson started out in 1935 working for the C. D. John son Mill at Toledo. Since 1941 he has been self-employed. Most of the time his company has been in operation, they have had as their prime interest, sal vage operations of blow down and disease-infested timber tracts. Last year the firm was successful bidder on a tract of green timber on Evans moun tain. Wilson said right now he could use some skilled labor. He needs a high climber and hooker in his woods crew and an all-around man who could work as a mill-wright and lum ber grader. He said he believes the shop at the local high school should teach a class in cable splicing and lumber grading then maybe all our young men would not have to leave the area to find worx. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson have five children, the oldest. Thom as will enter Northwest Chris tian college in Eugene next month; Bill. Wilda and Nellie are in high school and David is in the sixth grade. Three families moved to Mill Sty with the Wilsons and the men are employed in the opera tion here.
