Becky Roemer, who was killed in an auto accident near Silverton Monday afternoon in a blind ing rainstorm. Tlie Roemer car. a convert ible sports car, skidded broad side into an oncoming panel truck after it clipped the rear of another car. Both Mr. and Mrs Roemer were thrown from the car. He was reported in good condition at the Silverton hospital. Mr. nnd Mrs, Roemer. 17 nnd 18 years of age had been married a short time and both 1 graduated from Silverton High school with the class of 1963. Mrs Roemer is survived by her husband Steve, her mother. Mrs. Jean Kuhlman, one sister, Ramona, two brothers, Steven . and Robin nnd ner grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs F. B. Land ers all of Silverton. Kids Parade Above is a group of youngsters who en tered their jM'ts, bikes, tri kef, and buggies in the July Fourth parade. They all seemed to have a big time and it did add to the gaiety of the event. Many See July 4 Queen Crowned Nancy Stewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Stewart and a Junior at Santiam Union High school next year was se lected as Queen of the 5th annual Queen contest. Wednes day evening, July 3 at the form er Mill City theatre. There were eight contestants and the judges said their decision was a difficult one. Mayor J. C. Kimmel, assisted by last year's queen. Janice Logan, crowned Nancy and pre sented her with a large txiu- quet of red roses. courtesy of Brunner's Flowers, Mrs Brun- ner also presented each prin- cess with a corsage to wear during the Queen selection contest. The contestants were judged on poise, personality and per formance with Queen Nancy winning with her original, hum orous reading based on TV commercials. Leanna Carpenter played an accordian solo; Virginia Rich ards gave a reading fp>m “Showboat;” Janet Hutchinson sang a solo, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Eldon Hutch inson at the piano; Janeta Johnson sang, accompanied by John Kelly; Leila Barney play oil a clarinet solo, also accom- panied by John at the piano; Laura Jo Rambo did a panto mime and dance act: and Shar on Berg gave an original read ing on Broadway play titles. Ihiring the intermission while lhe judges were making their decision Mary Gay ReMine sang several selections accom panied by John Kelly at the piano. John Vaughn of Salem radio station KBZY acted as master of ceremones for the contest and the coronation ball which followed. Each princess was escorted to the stage by her father or some other relative. M r. Vaughn escorted the newly se lected Queen to the gym for the ball. Merchants in town donated gifts which were given to Queen Nancy. Muir’s Bakery donated a beautifully decorated cake for the Coronation ball. Teenage Committee members worked hard to attend to all the many details which go into making a Queen contest and a 4th of July parade a success and deserve a lot of credit for their outstanding efforts. the Captain and Dale and Jerry Grant as colored deck hands.
