He »aw active duty with the Navy during World War II and ' served brieftly with the Air Technical Command and the Ninth Service Command before I joining the Portland District of I Engineers in 1946. He wa» one of the first men working at the Detroit Dam, coming here during the actual oon»trucUon period. Local Couple Has Car Accident Mon. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Barker narrowly escaped death or ser ious injury when their car skid ded off the North Santiam High way west ot Mill City Monday afternoon. They were enroute to Stayton to keep a doctor's appointment and encountered a severe hail slorm which caused the pave ment to become slippery. Occupants of a car traveling a short distance behind them said their car suddenly veered across the highway and plunged over the 35-foot embankment. Mrs. Barker was driving at the time of the accident and the car landed bottom up at ÜM lost of the cliff. Both Mr. and Mrs. Barker had been under a doctor's care before the accident and their physician said their injuries were miraculously not severe. They were taken by ambu lance to Santiam Memorial hospital where they are getting along satisfactorily. Miss Linda Barker has been chosen as salutatorian of De-, troit high school this year for her scholastic achievement dur ing the past four years. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A L.
